The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Kandya, I have an electric poultry fence that surrounds my 3 coops and 2 tractors. My rainbow flock is in a coop with a 16x16' net covered run and my Welsummers are in a coop with a 10x20' run that is also net covered. In both runs they have eaten everything so the poultry fence is an ideal way to allow them to forage in grass areas. Each day I alternate which flock stays in and which flock it out. If the rainbow flock is out I have to watch my foot placement to avoid stepping on a squatting hen. When the Welsummers I don't have to worry. They come when I enter but the keep their distance. I've found the Welsummers to be a very calm breed but one that isn't particularily friendly.

ChikieLyn, welcome to BYC and to the Welsummer thread. Your rooster looks like he may have the potential to be a real good bird. The comb and wattle looks good, his body size and attitude are appropriate. I assume he is less than a year old and his color should get better as he develops. To assess a bird I like to see a side profile with the bird filling the entire photo. Next a good straight on shot where I can evaluate his chest feathering. Lastly a side profile head and neck shot that includes his entire hackle. The focus needs to be crisp and the colors vibrant as we are to see what you see when you look at him.

This is Larry. He's 2 1/2 years old. The whole time I was trying to get a good photo he was looking for a way to attack me!

It was over a 100 and that's why he's holding his wings down.

Here is Larry at about a year old. I thought I would add it so ChickieLyn can see the difference a year makes. The evening sun was not hitting quite as pretty as it did yesterday:

TammyTX, nice looking bird, great color. I'm surprized when I read about Welsummer roosters attacking. I've never owned an aggressive one, but let's not talk about some of my others.

Thank you.

Yeah, he's a meanie! He REALLY hates my clunky Crocs but I didn't have them on tonight, so I don't know what his problem is. He was giving me the stink eye, just waiting for me to turn my back. Maybe he's camera shy!

I have one Wellie hen left, out of five. Seems like I had the worst luck with them. I want more because their eggs are so pretty. Not as pretty as some of the photos here, but I still like them mixed with my EE'rs.

The photo looks blurry for some reason on here. I tried making it full size but it still looks funny.

Thank you, Opa. He was hatched 2/15, so he's only 16 weeks old at this point. I got him with two pullets at 6 weeks of age, and figured they would be nice since they are originally from "pinkchick", and I've been reading her posts and drooling over her birds for awhile. All three are very sweet birds, and while they don't like to be fondled, they are very friendly.

Thanks for telling me about the photos - that's exactly what I needed to know. I'll repost some photos in another 90 or 120 days to show how he's developing. Now I need to figure out how to get more good chicks (I don't do the hatching part yet - still way too new). Thanks again!

Hi ChikieLyn! Thanks for the kind words. I am very glad that you are enjoying them. They are alot of fun and it's always nice to hear from folks that have them and keep caught up with how they progress.
Yep....that boy looks just like his papa.....except this boy has a TOTALLY cool comb and my Odin boy does not. It's really nice to see him. He will change alot over the next couple of months, and by this I mean he will beef up, I know he is already pretty large, but he will get bigger. Odin is weighing in at 11.5 lbs this summer and he is just now 2 years old. Odin is also VERY tall.

As for the photos....I agree with Opa about the angles and view of the birds that help us see them.

I only have one bone to pick with you though.......Where's the photos of the pullets?????????????
