The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Opa, I am SO THRILLED to be getting some hatched chicks from you at CHICKENSTOCK on the 25th!

I just have to remember to bring the Coleslaw with RAISINS for the potluck and I am SO looking forward to SMOKED CHICKEN.

Someone recently posted about NHR being real meanies and Wellies lowest on their pecking order in their flock.

My last 4 NHR will be leaving soon for a home with a man and his two young daughters. I sat and spent many hours playing with those chicks as they were growing up and still pick them up most every day. I have moved them into the pit greenhouse with the 4 laying hens (GLW, LtSussex, Barneveldar) and just 2 of them can keep that flock of 6 birds cornered up on top of the nestboxes all day long after a week. The Barnie is ecstatic cause she was lowest on the pecking order and now she is a BULLY.

1 year old laying hens versus 4 NHR 12 week olds that are almost as big.

I'm thinking it is how much time you spend with them when they are little as to how nice they are in a flock???

Cheers all. Rainy day here so I'm inside instead of busy outdoors. Alpacas got sheared last week and look SUPER SKINNY and kind of funny looking compared to the fluffy sheep look they had two weeks ago.

Chicken chores are calling.

It been cool and overcast here most of the day and I was thinking about going out to gather eggs when the sky opened up. Since I might melt I think I'll wait for the rain to let up before venturing out.

Bonnie the eggs go into lock down on the 18th so keep your fingers crossed.

Sure wish you'd send some of that rain down here! Average temp this week 98 degrees, winds 10 -15 mph...HOT/DRY...the little bit of coastal hay/grass we've got is so crispy/dry (due to the lack of rain) we're only bailing 1/4 of what we usually bail.......PLUS the grasshoppers are taking over.....they are in biblical proportions!!!!
Wish I had your moist green environment..........you guys are lucky in my eyes.

I'd sell you some, but with the heat and the distance I'm not sure how viable they would be. Go the the WCNA website and there is a list of breeders on there.

This is my first hatching of eggs and now they are 4-5 weks old.I was wondering if this is a typical looking pair?I was going to start to weed out a few of what i think are roos to give the rest more space.
thank you

All american chick.....yes, that's a typical looking pair. The boys always get larger pink combs by about 4 weeks and the girls always have the salmon colored chests.

thank you for that.I needed it to be confirmed before I start thinning them out.
Well out of the 25 chicks looks like i have around 6 hens.Geez not to good a ratio.
Some we hatched and some we bought as chicks.

These are the neatest birds. Can hardly wait for those super cool eggs.
thanks again

Before I hatch any more Welsummers I have got to find a more powerful led flashlite for candling eggs. Out of 22 eggs I tried to check tonight there was only one that was a possible maybe as far as being able to see anything. The others were much to dark. So I guess in 3 for 4 days I will know if Bonnie is getting any chicks. Tomorrow I will start saving eggs for her and next Saturday is Michigan's Chickenstock so hopefully I will be bringing her both eggs and chicks.

Several others on the Michigan thread have indicated that they will be attending Chickenstock and bringing Welsummers. It will be interesting to see the quality of their birds and to perhaps discover from which bloodline theirs were derived.
