Opa, I am SO THRILLED to be getting some hatched chicks from you at CHICKENSTOCK on the 25th!
I just have to remember to bring the Coleslaw with RAISINS for the potluck and I am SO looking forward to SMOKED CHICKEN.
Someone recently posted about NHR being real meanies and Wellies lowest on their pecking order in their flock.
My last 4 NHR will be leaving soon for a home with a man and his two young daughters. I sat and spent many hours playing with those chicks as they were growing up and still pick them up most every day. I have moved them into the pit greenhouse with the 4 laying hens (GLW, LtSussex, Barneveldar) and just 2 of them can keep that flock of 6 birds cornered up on top of the nestboxes all day long after a week. The Barnie is ecstatic cause she was lowest on the pecking order and now she is a BULLY.
1 year old laying hens versus 4 NHR 12 week olds that are almost as big.
I'm thinking it is how much time you spend with them when they are little as to how nice they are in a flock???
Cheers all. Rainy day here so I'm inside instead of busy outdoors. Alpacas got sheared last week and look SUPER SKINNY and kind of funny looking compared to the fluffy sheep look they had two weeks ago.
Chicken chores are calling.
