The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hopefully something will happen today with the eggs in the incubator. So far all I have to show for this latest hatching effort is the two hatched by the broody.

I'm up to 13 hatched and alive Wellies.

I have 3 more in the bator alive but not hatching and probably getting weaker. They still need to soak up their yolks/blood veins. I'm not holding out a lot of hope, but we will see.

Heat is rising again outside. Chicks did ok in the garage brooder box, but this morning they were all huddled under the brooder lamp.

Cheers all and have a happy week.

Bonnie

Those are so cute! I'm just gonna have to start some day-old Wellies at some point. Maybe I can hatch some under something broody - none of mine are old enough to even lay at this point....

Forgive me if I am asking a question again, I have looked and can not find the answer with the searching techniques I know. I am looking for Wellsummer's that are large (roosters over 9 lb), and produce a darker speckled egg. I am less concerned about show quality and more concerned about egg type. Laying rate is not as important. Which breeders are recommended for this type?

If we knew what part of the country you are in it might make it easier to make recommendations. You may find it difficult to find Welsummers of the size you are looking for. Nine pounds is substantially larger than breed standards and birds of that size I would suspect have been crossed with another breed. While I haven't weighed him I would be surprized if my rooster exceeds 7 lbs. Breed standard calls for roosters to be 7 lbs and hens to be just under 6 lbs.

Our rooster who is just a year old weighs in at 6.5 lbs. He went in today for 4-H at our fair- judging is tomorrow.

True addiction - the quest of a broody so you can have more.
