The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've never heard that one, other than the pink and moist vent.

You can put your fingers between their pelvic bones BELOW their vent. If there is only a 1 finger gap between them, the bird is not laying. 2-3 fingers and the bird is laying. (of course it's not a precise measurement as everyone's fingers are different sizes)

LOL...maybe he was measuring the pelvic bone area...his hands were waaaaayyyy bigger than mine and when he showed me he referred to his fingers and the vent, but with the pelvic bone being directly under the vent then maybe the effect is the same. Anyway...glad you posted that Kelly, thank you. I wrote it down. You rock!

After much fanfare - I was able to get one flipped over for a look. I held her while my husband performed the exam. He reported that there was only 1 finger-width between bones so I guess the mystery is solved for now. Thanks for all of the information. I have learned a lot reading this forum over the past few months. I'll try to get a few pictures up soon because I know everybody enjoys looking at the pretty ladies.

Hey~

Does anyone have a picture of Welsummer eggs next to Barnveldears? I have three Barnies, and would like to get some Welsummers. Are the egg colors different?

Thanks!

I can get pics for you tomorrow or Tuesday.

Yes, the colors are different. Wellies are more reddish, like a brick. Barnies are more coppery. (if that's a word)
