The Welsummer Thread!!!!

This is the exact reason I wont be raising chicks in the basement anymore. Too dusty and too messy!

We also have to start early- hence the NYD hatch so the birds will be big enough for fair time. We keep the chicks in the kitchen till they are about 2 weeks and since we are lucky to have a heated garage(for storing our work equipment ans supplies) they move out there till it is nice for them to be outside. I agree that they are dusty and we end up vacuuming alot, we also decided that it stresses out our Irish Setter to much for them to be inside for a long time- she has a very strong prey drive and would harm the chicks given the chance.... we know this 1st hand unfortunately.

I have never had so many pullets molt as I have this year.

I thought I'd be fine for eggs this winter since I had so many pullets - well I guess they decided to prove me wrong.

I'm so glad to hear others are having this problem. I thought mine were just laying somehwere I couldn't find, but I haven't seen an egg in a long while either!

Haven't gotten my first Welsumer egg yet so don't know for sure, but I thought they are supposed to be a deep chocolate brown???
