The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Okay folks, I need an update for the Breeder's List on the WCNA website. Some of the folks never kept in touch or some interested parties said they no longer in business of selling eggs and chicks.

So you all need to give me a heads up who is staying on the list and who is wanting OUT of the list.

Hi Robin, I'm still here, still breeding and showing the Welsummers, still selling hatching eggs, and for those local - chicks up to adults.

I think you will find that speckles are a genetically inherited or passed on trait. Some time back I read a detailed article on the formation of the egg. Fascinating article of which I have forgotten most but for those interested, I'm sure you could find it if searched for. Just as egg shape is genetically linked, it makes sense to me that color would be as well. But everyone on here probably knows I don't claim to be anything close to a geneticist or even knowing much about it.

I have bred my birds for an absence of speckles. Having said that, I still get the occasional speckles. There is something to be said for the "clogged ink jets" theory. I find the speckles occur most during specific periods. For example, the first eggs from pullets will often be speckled. Periods of stress often cause my eggs to be speckled. This can be anything from extreme cold or hot weather to taking them to a show. Eventually though, they go back to their normal "smooth" color in a short period of time.

For what it's worth, I still hope to establish a separate strain and line of Welsummers this year. These birds are known for laying a very speckled egg. I will be keeping this strain and line separate from my other and hope to see continued speckled eggs. And then, I'll be crossing my two strains & lines into a third of my own making.

God Bless,

Almost all of mine lay speckled or spotted eggs. One or two lay a very dark solid egg that rivals my Marans but all the rest, over a dozen birds, lay speckled eggs. I think they are gorgeous. I've got the solid brown Black Copper Marans eggs but the speckled eggs my Welsummers lay are each so different and interesting. They always get lots of compliments and questions when people see them.

Some that went out last week in an assorted order. Wellies are on the left (like you didn't know that):

GORGEOUS Egg basket Monique!!!!!!!!!!!! Simply GORGEOUS!!!!

That is one beautiful basket. And that is exactly what I am looking for! My current three girls all lay light brown eggs(Wyandotte, Australorp, and RIR). EEs and Wellsumers are on the way. An Olive egger may be needed as well...

Robin, I am not on the breeders list, but I want to stay a member.

Gorgeous eggs Monique. The whole basketful!

My last wellie girl started back up yesterday! I'm collecting now to test fertility (and for the girls to become more "regular") and then I'll start collecting for shipping!

Congratulations Monique on the hatching...can't wait to see more little fluffy butt photos!

Congratulations Kelly!!!!!!!!!! Hope you have a very successful test hatch!
