The Welsummer Thread!!!!

7 quitters? That's a lot more than I would have expected, and concerns me. I hope you have a great hatch with the remaining 6.

Thanks and I hope I get some boys. Don't let the 7 quitters concern you......they were shipped and they all developed. The last time I candled they were all doing what seemed to be great...so they developed pretty far.
It's probably me......I touched them. I'm just not having any luck with any eggs, other than my Marans eggs lately.
Couldn't even hatch out 11 gorgeous Olive eggs that came from birds, that came from me, that my friend gave me a few weeks ago. But you know what.....the one and only Marans egg (also from my lines) that he gave me.....stinkin' hatched!!!!!!!!!

Uffda!

If you don't get any boys or you want more to choose from, let me know ASAP and I'll keep mine for you. We have a friend that is interested in 3 roosters, but doesn't care what breed - so they won't be staying long. (but I have others to give him if you want the wellies)

And I'm so sorry you are having so much trouble with your hatches.

Thanks for the link, very good info! I especially am intriqued with the water weasel......

I have more eggs going and lockdown again on Wednesday. Then the following week. BUT, I am going to work on calibrating the instruments and see.

In April, the eggs will be all Welsummer, so progress is being made.

I know it is my bator, cause the 2 dozen eggs I took down the road are hatching, 18 went into lockdown and tomorrow is day 21 and I will get to see pics of those babie and see what my birds did!!

The info I was refering to on temperature is in this article

I used this info when I first started hatching. I personally have less problems with eggs if the temps are on the low side of the range. I actually just had an incubator get unplugged for 2 days at day 17 and still had 6 out of 25 hatch after I plugged it back in. I think its just like a chick that gets too cold, you can sometimes see them come back when they warm up. Once their cooked their done though. I hope you get it worked out. One of the most frustrating things in the world of chickens that loosing chickies

I hope you can get it worked out! I really like the look of that inucbator. did you get it recently? Can you please keep us posted on how it works once you get it calibrated? at the prices they are selling those for its so tempting! I keep thinking about getting a bigger one like that... but I think it would be dangerous for me to be able to hatch that many chicks lol.

I have two of the brinsea 24 egg incubators - one is an advance and the other is an eco. I've had great luck with them when other things don't go wrong. twice in the past year I have lost eggs due to the incubator getting unplugged! The most recent was last week. I had unplugged one inucbator that had finished a hatch and must have unplugged the other one by accident. Two days later I went to candle the eggs for lock down... all cold! I got lucky though, I plugged it back in and still ended up with 8 chicks. I was shocked that they made it after being cold for that long.

Just FYI, I have a Sportsman 1502 with supplemental reservoir on top. Basically, that's a five gallon bucket they charge you $60-70 bucks for. I set the eggs, close the door, don't open it until time to transfer to hatching tray, and never have to fiddle with a thing. The only exception is if I have a hatch coming off right about the time I'm taking another batch of chicks from the hatching tray. Then I may need to put the humidifer pad in to increase the humidity and prevent the membrane from acting like shrink wrap.

God Bless,

Here is sweet little LADY GWEN, born on Sunday 3/25 at 2 pm, just as the teens were putting hay into the girls bin. First bale of hay, JT noticed head and legs sticking out of momma. But it didn't register until he was putting in the second bale. Then he jumps the fence and gets over to the newly born cria who was shaking in the cool weather and picks her up in his arms to rub her dry and warm her up in the car for an hour until I could get there. Then the sun came out so we could put them in the lean to we are building for a little sun and bonding time. Isn't she the sweetest little alpaca?

Please critique. I got the roos banded yesterday. It was very windy out, but some of the roos are looking very promising. Most have frostbite damage and many are neck feather picked on the necks. So ignore that. Interested in body shape, back length, tail set, correct feathering. Some have long wattles some have shorter rounder ones, many have 5 point combs. I see nice brown wing feathers in this photo?

I can clearly see his band #17 AND he has an orange zip tie. The only roo with an orange band left on. Very promising?

This is #17 again. So OPA, does he look familar at all? I just looked up the orange zip ties and this one is from your chicks you so kindly hatched me out last June. So that would make him Calicowoods via Sam Grissom line.

Can't quite see the band number, but it is a single digit and I don't think it is number 3, so please critique the top one here.

Here is #3. Nice red down the leg and he is tilted forward slightly getting ready to peck for bugs. Of all the roos, only 2 had their zip ties left. The rest are a mystery as to which line they are. I will be using the best for breeding this year and just make my own VanMeter line.... Please critique!!

I'm beginning to wonder why that orange band keeps popping up, guess I was trying to get lots of good photos of #17. Critiques please!!
