The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hello there, I have hatched out 13 welsummer chicks over the weekend. They are so cute! My question is....is it true that the females are the darker striped ones & the males the lighter ones?? Has anyone had success with sexing them this way?

Blueberry.......in your incubator shot, I see 3 boys. Generally the girls have a well defined V on their head and eyeliner. Boys have a messy V on their head and no eyeliner (but may have the smudge behind their eye). It's not 100% and sometimes you get one that stumps you.

Thought I'd share this with all you wellie folks. I have wanted a daughter of my aging light brahma for my egg laying flock. She has been a great layer, and is one of my favorite girls from my original flock. I was hoping to increase egg size in her offspring. It intrigued me that the genetic calculator said I would get a buff colored bird from her if I crossed her with a welsummer male.

So, since she resides with Moose, I hatched one of her eggs and got lucky, it's a pullet. (for a while I was worried about the red bleed through in the wing area, as it's typically a male coloration) This is what she looks like (in the center). I think she's beautiful and should give me some nice eggs for my eating egg customers. She's 9 weeks old.

Howdy, all. I've been out of touch for while, but now that my Wellie chicks from the birds I got last year from Pink are hatching all over the place, I thought I'd drop in and let you know. Anyone in northernmost California need some nice chicks from some excellent stock????

Robin~ Very glad you are home, Welcome Home. Continued Prayers coming to you my friend!

Happy Chooks~ That girl is lovely. I bet she gives you very pretty eggs! 2 cockerels and one pullet from your eggs are doing great! I have been busy lately and haven't had a chance to get photos of them for you, but will work on it soon. :)

Beesong~ Hey Lady! Good to see you back as well! The chicks look great! Congrats on such a nice hatch. Question for ya.........Do you have...or can you get a photo of the chick that is marked in the photo? It looks as though it has an un-necessary mark on the head above the eye and also looks like the V is very broad and large. What does the eyeliner look like on this chick? At first glance, I thought this chick looks to me, like a Barnie x Wellie and if that is the case then someone around here committed a big No-No!! And worse yet..... it also means I didn't catch it!!!!!

I so hope I am seeing things.

Will do. I wondered about those markings, too, but just thought they were cute......... I'll be out for most of the day but will send a photo as soon as I can.
