The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I just had one of my Welsummer eggs hatch that I bought from Whitmore Farms.
Do you think this will be a Rooster? Or Hen?

I know the markings & eyes are supposed to be how you tell but I am new to Welsummers & hope you all can help. Thanks for looking.

As always you're input is great! I hope things settle down enough next year to get your photo project done, but just seeing what you have will be great. Are you going to send them to Robin to put on the WCNA site or are they for your website?

Thanks Diane. I plan to put them in catalogs on my website once I get it built. I just got my company/business website back up after losing it due to Microsoft's fiasco with their Office Live Small Business suite going away. I hope to be able to have my personal website up by the EOY. I can also send Robin pics at her request once she sees them on my website. I've got way too many to bother sending now just from the Day Olds through 1, or is it 2(?), week olds.

Btw, to the person with the four chick pics. I think you've got four pullets. I can't see the headcap on all of them well enough but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

God Bless,

If I can get a pic of my hatchery Wellie, will some of you be willing to comment on her SOP? I'm wondering if she's anywhere close. Of course *I* think she's gorgeous, but she's just hatchery quality. From what I see of other "good" birds though, mine seems pretty close!!

Better yet, why not bring her to the show in Chehalis on the 17th? There's nothing better for comparisons that to look at your bird right along side several others. And don't worry about it being a hatchery bird. Likely you won't be in the running for any awards but that's not the most important thing you can glean from the experience. I'm reminded of last year's show in December, my friend and I cooped-in our birds on Friday night and there was a bird already in the cage that was obviously a hatchery bird. I won't say anymore than that for fear of offending someone by chance if it were there bird.

I wanted to badly to catch that person before they left so I could point out a few things and maybe even help them get started with some nice birds but, alas, I didn't see they coop-out and were gone before I could get cooped-out so I never got the chance.

All that is to say that I was actually shocked by how striking the difference was. Had I not seen the birds side-by-side, I likely would ot have noticed the difference as much. So I think it would be a great learning experience for you.

God Bless,

nfs birds are pullets and k9s are cockerels - chicks I LOVE your wellie's first eggs. One of my 10 wellies just started laying and her eggs
are nearly as dark as yours but not quite - hopefully some of her 'sisters' will have darker colored and spotted eggs.

I agree. Congrats!
Two hatched out today but the other one was under the wing and I didn't want to disturb them. When I get a good look at the other I will post a picture. There is sill one more Wellie egg in the bator so I still may have a few hens

Luckily I know someone who will want a Wellie Rooster. I have two Roos and I free range so I don't want things getting crazy here so I will re-home my boys.

Well I am going to my first show this Saturday 20 Oct.It is a small show put on by the "Fancy Fowl Club of North Georgia " about 2 counties away. I have 3 Welsummer roos that I hatched May 23 so my boys are 5 months old. I am only taking the 2 best and let the judge tell me of those 2 which is considered the best. I will post results Sunday and possibly some pics of them.
Do you always get anxious at these or is it just first show jitters

When I last hatched some Wellies, I was told to go by the V..and yes the eyeliner. I am seeing here though, that now it is more by the eyeliner? The eyeliner needs to go how far back. I had 7 eggs go into lock down a few days ago, Had 6 hatch. I was thinking I had all girls, and one boy..how lucky is that? Posting some pictures, but not real good ones of the eyes. I have some Lavender Orpingtons in there too. No telling on those for a while for sure.

you can see the one in the back that I am thinking boy by the V alone..no eyeliner to
speak of..all of the others have eyeliner

I did get a picture of one of the face. Pretty cute face, have to say. Girl?

Another group shot.
