Sorry I forgot to add that part, they are Trader Joe's eggs, white leghorns I suppose.

I find the Trader Joe angle fascinating because they are refrigerated and some still hatch. Which leads me to believe that eggs chilled and shipped with a cool pack would be more stable because the interior egg material would be more gelatinous and less likely to slosh around in the egg shell.

ETA .... And mark the shipping box fragile ... hatching eggs etc.

Thanks for the link; I've already read through that entire thread with interest. That was what got me started with my bleaching/rinsing/not doing anything experiment, which is of course being done under highly UNscientific conditions and with several other variables besides the washing thing. I'm also looking at staggered hatches and the effects of extreme fluctuations in humidity, as well as hatchability in eggs stored for over 10 days. I have now set three batches of eggs and the first lot have already hatched successfully. The incubator is filthy now which is why I'm not so confident about the next two lots, but it'll be interesting to see what happens. I won't be assisting chicks to hatch in any way, so they better be tough!

I wish I could have a side bar appear when I'm in the BYC forum that lists all of the acronyms so I don't have to wonder what they're saying or what breed they're talking about THIS time... Took me a while to figure out BLRW. ETA still has me wondering...
