the Will They Hatch? thread

Good or bad , shipped eggs are often the only feasable way of getting a quality start of the variety we want , or desired additions to improove what we already have in our flocks . If each shipment of eggs were handled by a paid individual , or series of individuals , in a manner that kept them safe from harm and hatchable , I suppose the cost would be too high to make them obtainable for the average Joe .

Yeah, your right.

The annoying thing is this breeder only lives about an hour and a bit from my parents.

*I* would just go get them next time I visit but DH thinks I'm being ridiculous.

I think it's more than worth an extra 2 hours drive to pick up $50 eggs!

Hi SteveH and everybody else here. I'd like to join in please!

I was nearly finished with a staggered hatch experiment and a few days ago I decided to extend it and set ten more eggs. Some of them are a fortnight old. Most of them were pretty filthy when I collected them. Some of them have been washed in bleach and some of them have been rinsed clean in hot water. They'll have to cope with infrequent turning and really high humidity between days 6 and 10 when another four eggs in the same bator go into lockdown. And the bator is already absolutely filthy inside due to the first five chicks that hatched in it a week ago.

So... Will They Hatch?

Hi SteveH and everyone, I would like to join even though I put my eggs in the hatcher 2 hours ago. They are a barnyard mix of shipped eggs. They all look alive but there are some huge and funny looking air cells. One of the eggs the air cell is on the side, not even on the top and it looked like the little chickie is still alive, so here's hoping for a good hatch for us all.

That's a great idea! I'll be sure to use it when I have to remove the non-viable eggs before lockdown! However, it's just so much more... sensible to just throw some more eggs in the incubator

(that's what I tell myself, anyway).

I have no room for these chicks! I don't even have a brooder for them, I have no idea what I was thinking. Half of my brain is hoping that nothing hatches.

Then the other half is screaming ONLY 19 MORE DAYS TO CUTE FUZZY BUTTS!!!

Day 21 begins this evening 6pm. Temps have been difficult to control, most times steady, with occasional ups and downs, yesterday had a spike of about 104F. Humidity numbers have been pretty good. No action in any eggs. started with 24, day 18 candling allowed 15 viable chicks going into lockdown. Will they hatch? That's a funny question, I'll know the answer in a few days
