the Will They Hatch? thread

Twenty eggs in the hatcher this morning.

Only one little serama still going of the 12 replacements from the bashed box that came 6 weeks ago.

And, only 6 of the 31 orps that came with the smashed and cracked eggs in the perfectly fine box from last month.

The rest our my home growns. All just humming along. This has been a horrible start for shipped eggs. I usually have better numbers.

On the positive side, both sellers of the orps have also sent replacements. For which I am super grateful! I know they didn't have to. So those eggs all went in on the 19th.

One pipped too far down and got it's beak all the way out. Good and stuck. Several ours later I peaked in and there was yellow fluid dripping down the shell and foaming out of the beak! I chipped a little shell away to let the fluid drain away from the beak. A large piece came off... I have no idea where the air sack is... there doesn't seem to be one. Anyway it's still up there in the incubator half in, half out, and breathing. Will this one hatch? I have another hatching, pipped and is now zipping the long way down the shell. Hmmmm. I'm not too hopefull on these guys, but 6 or 32 are out!

I ended up stabilizing the temp after viewing a video that I found, I think by way of BYC (wish I could find it for you!) that explains something that you may already know, but thought I'd share it with you just in case... It has to do with putting your thermostat close enough to the light to narrow the temp range usually incurred by using a water heater thermostat. Being close to the light (around a couple of inches, depending on the wattage of your bulb, etc) makes the thermostat feel more heat from the radiant heat of the light, and thus shut off faster, reducing the swings in temp. If the temp is stabilizing at too high a temp than you want, then you move the thermostat slightly away from the light, but still facing it. Hope this makes sense...I'm really sleepy as I write this...

Also wanted to mention that 3 of my questionable eggs have hatched!! we are very happy as we have 3 little girls who each have picked one out and christened with a ridiculous name that fits them perfectly.

The remaining 4 show no signs of hatching, but I'm hopeful as its only day 22 and I've heard of people hatching at day 25 (especially with all my eggs have been through!)

Welcome! [I really figured this thread would have died before now.] I'm thinking you're going to hatch some of those eggs.

There's always going to be dissappoitments; but they're always followed by a blessing soon after.

Like 3 pips from the 6 surviving eggs!!
