Can you put a pad lock or 2 on your latches? That might deter them a bit. Also make the pens sturdy so they would have to make some noise to break in it if it is locked.

this lfmr law enforcement type person was just thinking that a few boards with nails or screws that might happen to be scattered on the ground around the coop, nails up, would be mighty hard to establish as intentional, as would a mis-wired hot wire fence that just happened to have just a little too much juice....maybe 5 ground rods worth?? i dunno looks to me like that fella ran into a tree in the dark....several times, hard to prove that kinda stuff was intentional. I had my firewood stolen by tweeker scrotes, once...now, no one comes onto my place, and its not just because I have very large dogs in the yard. Out where I live, it takes an average of 25-30 minutes for a deputy to respond, that sure is a long time for any fool caught doing something they shouldn't, and there are not a lot of problems out here.

Usually I do not like law stating dogs, cats, chickens etc are property; except in this case.

The chickens are your property. Defend them as you see fit.

I love the idea of the hot wire fence with a little too much juice. That would be just too hilarious to watch.

Pineapple grenades look cool but I don't know if they're even used anymore. You might be able to get inert ones at a surplus store, wire them up to a fake trip wire and fool the miscreant.

Lots of nonlethal and relatively harmless things can be done.

panner might be dealing with drug growers too. Makes it more dangerous just having them around. Might want to keep the bears close by.

i'm not sure about the homeless chicken rustler theory. Does Weimar have a large homeless population? Isn't it in the foothills, with mountains and big trees? Hard to push a shopping cart through that terrain.
