The Wyandotte Bantam Thread

Need help with the SOP... four month old partridge Wyandotte with good lacing but both girls have a point at the top of their comb... is this a disqualification?

A rose comb is supposed to have a point at the back, that points backwards, and in a Wyandotte turn down a bit.

However, as they grow the point can wiggle around a bit before it settles in place.

The Wyandottes are here! I picked them up at the post office today. Alaskan, I believe I have two blues. I had three, but the only chick that was DOA was a blue.

Along with the blues, I think I have 7 Columbians, 6 golden laced, 2 buffs, and 8 buff Columbians. One extra was included, so I received a full order. I'm very pleased here at the whole 2-hour mark. They are very lively, and appear to be doing well.

I'm sure several of these will be lovely.

So much fun!

Giant congrats!

Do watch and make sure all have had their beaks dipped in the water, and then shown the feed and are eating.

I think the shipping is harder on the bantams. I have a harder time getting them all to survive shipping.

Thank you, Neighbor! It is fun! They are so cute. They already have a larger brooder. They came a day early, and I wasn't yet ready for them.

I'm looking forward to watching their personalities reveal themselves, and seeing how I like the breed. I need a non-toxic marker to mark their little heads when I see them drink.

I usually just stick all in a small box (so they are crammed together and stay warm.), coean the brooder, then put them back into the now clean brooder one at a time and dunk their beak in the water first.

If I am super paranoid in the evening , I do the same trick, put hoard of chicks in small box, then transfer back to brooder one at a time, and check the crop of each one.

Anyone without a nice full crop goes into a "bad chick" box. When I am done going through all of them, if needed, all of the "bad chicks" are marked and force fed, or super encouraged to eat...or whatever.

But I have issues.

You made laugh out loud with "But I have issues." Don't we all? They follow each other everywhere and do everything the others do, so I'd be surprised if any missed the water, but I really do need a little non-toxic marker if I'm going to have 25 chicks. I'm not worried about their little crops. I could not believe how quickly and voraciously they started eating!!!! They are already on their second large serving of ground starter and they are going through it!

I need to take photos so y'all can help me figure out the buff colored chicks. I will be right back.

I think this is a Buff Wyandotte chick. Maybe one of two.

I think this is a Blue chick. It could be a Columbian, except its beak is a different color than the chicks I'm certain are Columbian, and its blue extends all the way to its head, which the bantam Columbians do not do, I don't think.

This is a Golden Laced chick. The darkest of the bunch. Too cute!

This is a Columbian chick, almost all soft, pale yellow except for a blue back.

Then, there are these guys. I'm pretty certain that the one on the left is a Buff Columbian. The one on the right is significantly darker, but not as dark as the for sure golden laced chick. So, I'm not sure what the one on the right is.

The lighter chick's back

The darker chick's back. Is this a Golden Laced chick, too? I hope so.

A Columbian and a buff Columbian chick.

A lighter buff Columbian chick.

The Columbian and the buff Columbian. Notice that the gray on the Columbian is significantly darker than the Buff's.
