The Wyandotte Thread

Chicks are 2-3 weeks old. They are already pecking at each other. I really did not want any roosters, but I am attached to them now. I heard that a rooster will protect the flock. That is good as long as he does not protect them from me! I am a bit nervous of roosters, have heard they attack people.

How many chicks do you have, they might be pecking eachother to set the pecking order, to small of a area or just bored. I havent had a mean rooster I always hold all my birds to keep them friendly, Roos are like dogs you show fear and they will use that to there advantage always stand your ground and show them your the boss. My friend had a RIR Roo that was a human attacker it made the mistake to attack me when my back was turned one day while I was taking care of it for him at my house, I turned around and booted it half way across the yard it came at me again and my 220lb German Rott stepped between us and dared it to attack again but ofcoarse the Roi with more brawn then brains did attack and my Rott grabed it by his body and carried it around the yard all the while the roo was screaming its head off. My Rott didnt hurt the Roo he just showed him who was boss and he droped it when I told him to lol.

I have 11 chicks but a couple are alittle bigger, so they chase the smaller ones. They are in a 12 X 12 stall. I have 4 feeders set out and 3 waters. I have stuff for them to climb on. I got rid of 4 RIR roosters. I have one left and a black rock rooster. But any aggression towards me and I will turn them out lose to fend for themselves. The RIR has threatened me a few times. My friend had to take her son to ER cuz her rooster got him in the face.

I think it is just a pecking order thing were the bigger chicks are letting the smaller one know this is there area it should stop. Ive been spured more then a few times by Roos so i know the feeling.

My wyandotte chick is starting to hatch :0) can not wait to see it! Its come from a blue laced hen and a buff laced cockerel....not sure what it's going to look like!

Its a buff laced chick! Doing well so far. Was getting picked on by mother hen so had to put under heat and will hand rear instead. X
