The Wyandotte Thread

thats good. I really like the temperment of the wyandottes. I have marans too, both breeds are great. I seem to be getting more wyandottes lately. i'm getting sq blrw chicks in any day not and end of sept getting blues that lay lg eggs. so i'm very happy right now. the only other breed i have is olive egg layers that i'm thinking of crossing on blrw roo (shes a blue cuckoo) just to see what i get in color. oh i thought i had put the hen too sorry. she is very nice too!

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Challenge

I would like to throw out a challenge to all serious breeders of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes to enter their BLRW in the upcomming Ohio National Poultry Show in November, the show is also slated to host the Eastern Wyandotte Breeders of America National Meet. I haven’t really gotten to see anyone else’s BLRW in some time since they rarely show up at the Poultry Shows and I would like to see how far along we have come with the BLRW in the last 5 years, compare how our mahogany red and type is on our different lines of BLRW, and I am hoping to see vast overall improvement. I know that when I started with my BLRW they looked like pretty colored barn fowl,. it would also be a great opportunity for all the BLRW breeders to get together and meet.

If I am brave enough to throw my reputation as a breeder of good BLRW on the line and enter my birds…well hopefully the rest of you BLRW Breeders will too…so let’s enter them in the show and see how they compare. I will be entering an old cock, old hen, cockerel, and pullet…and I may even do a display

Now remember you cannot enter a splash or black laced red Wyandotte….they have to be blue laced.

Thanks!

I hope everyone takes this challenge in the "good intentions" way that it is meant! The challenge is not to prove who has the best BLRW, but is an effort to improve them and hopefully get that first step going to one day get them accepted into the APA Standard.

Oh how I would love to go to the Ohio Nationals!!! And bring some BLRW's!!! However... I live in MN. Can you bring chickens on a plane??

I would love to meet other BLRW breeders. Went to the MN state fair last weekend. Not a single BLRW there. I finally met Duane Urch there and he had some amazing wyandottes but no BLRW. At this point I haven't ever shown any birds but I think I'd like to start. I work with 3 different breeds and there were no representatives of any of the breeds I work with!! Big plans for next year!!

Mr. Urch will be one of the judges at the show, not sure if he is judging wyandottes or not..I know the wyandotte club has picked their judges but I cant remember who they are.

Does anyone with experience with wyandottes know if the blue wyandottes are less healthy or harder to keep healthy than other wyandottes. I'm talking about the blue/black/splash wyandottes not the blue laced reds. I had three of them, one hen dropped dead for no apparent reason about 3 months ago, now I have a sick blue wyandotte rooster. My golden laced and silver laced hens are fine and have always seemed more healthy, more vigorous, laid earlier, matured quicker etc...

Interesting! All of mine are from Privett's also.

I will add, I don't think mine have good type, the blues, again, seem a little worse than the golden and silver laced. But I really love my blue rooster and hope I can get him on his feet again. Mind you, I love them all and was not looking for a show bird out of Privett's, just good egg layers, fun pets.
