The Wyandotte Thread

Jerry,

Do you think that the lighter "chestnut coloured birds" you mentioned might be single-dose(heterozygous) for the Mahogany gene? From what I have read, double-dose Mahogany birds(homozygous) are the deep dark rich (Rhode Island Red?) red base coloured birds. The single-dose Mahogany birds (heterozygous) have been described as being medium red - or, as you described them - "Chestnut" coloured, and the birds totally lacking the Mahogany gene, are supposed to be the bright Gold colour that most of the traditional Gold Laced birds exhibit. Does that sound reasonable to you? I think they are ALL striking and beautiful - and all worthy of breeding.

Regards,
Brian

I am not a genetic expert and I find that what I am suppose to get in a breeding according to genetics is not what I always get...but it just depends on what is lurking in the the background of my birds. I know that most of my BLRW do carry a double-dose of Mahogany Red....I do get pullets with the "chestnut" color that come out of my X pen (experimental pen) , I suspect that I am having some issues with the "wheaten" color in my birds...that is somehow related to my cross I made 4 gen back to Rhode Island Reds. Now anyone reading this don't freak out...I have never made them available to the public, just a few friends have birds from this pen ( Hi Colby). I also used White Wyandottes on them and who knows what that white was hiding? But I never had any Wheaten poping up until the RR cross....they seem to have an almost orange hackle color...but the good colored birds in this pen are a great deep almost black mahogany red from beak to tail, I just have to get them settled down so I don't get any off colored birds showing wheaten out of them. The type is incredible in this pen....took several generations to get that brick RR type to go away, but at least they dont look like Rocks (as most BLRW do)

Ahh, but those X pens hens are now in my egg layer pen for my customers. The crossings added production vigor where needed in my opinion. I can count on 5 eggs/ week per wyandotte after the first adult fall moult. I walk the delicate line between desirability for a perfect blr and one who can earn her keep. Their laying sisters are some hatchery glw who only produce 3 or 4 eggs/week. Poor type and poor layers (no offense hatchery folk) only drain my wallet and patience.

I do still have Pocahontas, she's some 8 years old though so I don't think she'll be making any babies... Though there's a handsome young lad prancing about! Here's Gulliver: http://i686.photobucket.com/albums/vv230/celticmoon666/Gulliver.jpg And I have a couple of nice-looking pullets growing so I hope to get some more nice GLWs next year

Anyway I'm Europe based, so exchanging eggs would be a problem....

I would have loved to have my hands on some of the stock I've seen here on BYC!

Tab's chicken obsession :

I've been looking for BLRW. Does anyone now of anyone that is selling any in NYS? They are so beautiful and wyandottes are my favorite.

Do a search for McSpin. He is in NY and sells chicks and eggs. I got a great hatch from his shipped eggs (12 of 15).

I'm really pleased with how they are finishing out...nice color, lacing and type.

My two little girls (hopefully!) they are about 16/17 weeks old now. Butternut is the splash (s/he was the one we weren't sure on sex. no crowing or rooster acting but just not sure yet) and Phoebe is the blue. They are hatchery but sweet as can be and very inquisitive!
