The Wyandotte Thread

Are you sure they aren't black laced reds? I'm not sure how the BLRW variety was developed exactly, but breeding GL and SL together will never result in blue...you would get either gold or silver laced with leakage. The blue gene in BLRW is the same as for andalusian, which means you could end up with blue, black, or splash (laced) birds. If you were to breed these "GLW" to the blue BLRW you should get 50% blue laced and 50% black laced. http://bluelacedred.com/blrindex.html has some nice pictures and a simplified chart of the BLRW genetics.

Now that I looked at the site (bluelacedred.com), I'm sure they're black laced reds. I hadn't a clue there was any such thing so you learn something new every day! I also contacted the person I got the eggs from and confirmed once again that he didn't have any GL eggs, which he didn't. So that clears that up. He spent an enormous amount of time with me explaining genetics, (thank you Daryl!) so I could explain them to my partner in crime (Kim from Camelot Farms) so that we could both understand what the heck we're doing. LOL

I think we've got it!!

Then I thought we had 2 Dun Laced but it looks like they're Splashes instead so that explains that as well. Now I don't feel as much of a dummy as I did yesterday. Thanks for the help!

Here are some bantam Barred Wyandottes that I scored today at Chickenstock VA. They're very friendly!

Here's the hen with my grandson.

I really like these two. Any opinions on them??

And here's one that we thought originally the way it was feathering out that it was Dun Laced. Now we know its a Splash. Pic's not that great, we were in a dark barn.

Actually he's the one that sparked my interest in poultry. First ducks, then chickens, then guineas. He's not fond of the geese. LOL He absolutely loves the chickens and enjoys caring for them.

Last year for his 8th birthday he asked for BBRed OEGB's! LOL!!

I just found this thread. We are new this yr to chickens, kicking myself for not researching more before just getting hatchery quality from my Uncle's feed store. Our chicks are about 12wks the oldest group that is which has 3 SLW. My smaller group is 9wks. I wanted a GLW so I found a local guy that called himself the chicken guy bought hatchery chicks & sold them off his farm. My Uncle's feed store had much better chicks then this chicken guy. Mostly I think it was because of the over crowding of the chicken guy's farm. Anyway they are turning out cute after getting their feathers back in. Maybe after a few make it to the dinner table we will be able to get some show quality, that would be fun for my 6yr daughter & me to get into. I show dogs & grew up in 4-H so it would be fun to get my daughter into it soon.

So here is my hatchery quality birds. I tried to get the best pictures but they never hold still & I haven't gotten new batteries for my good camera so this is all with my slow snapping camera phone. I have found that only the wyandotte's will peck our hands before they will let us pet them. Even the younger GLW does it, makes my daughter nervous to pet them. My Chuckoo Marans, EE & RIR will let us pet them & only make a noise, they have never pecked our hands, only the silly SLW & GLW do it.

From what you see which has the better coloring pattern?

This one is the smaller of the 3 & was very slow to feather out. This was taken about 2 wks back, it has gotten alot more white on its back.

This one is the nicer of the bunch, pecks alot less although loves my ring & has tried to twist it off ouch. The coloring seems to be better on this one so far. In the picture it was looking at the shiny button type things on my daughter's pants, they were all taking turns trying to take them off lol.

Compared to the SLW I'm almost liking this GLW's coloring so far then with the SLW I have. Seems to have more pattern coloring rather the just big patches of white with no black penciling.
