The Wyandotte Thread

Just had to say, our BLRW Roo likes our silver hen the best too...wonder why they are drawn to them. Don't know if they can go "broody", maybe he's a new generation roo-helping his lady

I had heard of this- Roo is tending to his Lady Hen

My son is showing with 4-H for his first time this year, and he's decided that SLW would be the bird for him. I agree; I think they're gorgeous. Does anyone have suggestions for egg vendors? I've been looking and mostly see BLRW (which I'd like for myself) and is it Hoppy who has the White/BLRW crosses in the auction section?

I've never shown before either, so this is pretty new to us both. It's only our second year with poultry. I take it that regular hatchery birds are a poor choice for showing?

Thanks

I've never shown either, but yes, hatchery birds are a very poor choice for showing if they are being judged against the standard (from what I understand some 4H shows go by the standard and others not so much). The body type is all wrong and the lacing is almost always poor. They're fine if you just want "pretty" birds for laying eggs, although I haven't really seen any hatchery laced birds that are as stunning as birds from a good breeder.

Here are my first ever Silver laced Wyandottes,

They are currently 7.4 months old.

My SLW Roo, his name...... "Han Solo"

I've seen some very nice photos here of slw, I think they were from Kathy or Katy...

I''m not familiar with many people here, but they did look good.

If you want show able Wyandotte bantams contact Andy Anderson. He advertises in the Poultry Press. He was also an APA Honoree at the APA National in December. Andy's ad states they are $17 dozen, freight paid. He does not have email nor does the forums. He also ships pairs and trios. I have purchased from him in years past and he has excellent stock. Contact him at:

I should have hatching eggs later on in late winter/early spring. I sell them thru the auction when I have them. Where are you located? You might contact Foley's waterfowl (turbo and Mrs. Turbo on BYC) to see if the have any pairs to ship. They also sell chicks and they have really nice birds. Have you done any hatching? If you haven't I'd encourage you to get chicks since shipped eggs are a risk on how many will hatch. Are you wanting bantams or large fowl? I have a few SLW bantams too. Here's pictures of a few of my large fowl birds.
