The Wyandotte Thread

I tend to use smaller ratios with my birds, but I don't think 6 hens is too many for an active roo. I know Turbos use 10-12 hens/roo. I don't have 12 hens of my Wyandottes (at least not til next year!!!!!), so I've never tried it.

You can also put a cock bird in with 6 hens for 3-4 days, then move him to the next pen for 3-4 days and then back to the first pen for 3-4 days. I think you could even add a third pen of 6. A chicken can store semen effectively for 7-10 days, so if she is exposed to a rooster more than once a week, that is plenty. Or if you want better coverage you can split the groups up into smaller groups and move him every 2 days, etc. Also, by doing that, you can single mate, which means you know exactly both parents. That can allow you to make strides very quickly.

Ok, you guys I need some help! I am getting 15 standard chicks (cuckoo marans, buttercups, e.e., and sumatras) in May from McMurray. I amgoing to build a brooder! My question is how big of a brooder should I need to hold them for 5-6 weeks? I have looked through almost all of the brooder thread and I can't really find anything. I was thinking a 3x5x2 would work, right? Pics, Advice, Ideas are welcome.

Thank you!

Until you figure what you really want try the largest storage tub you can find at Walmart. I used those for 3 years until DH made me a floor stand wooden one with dividers. When they start flying, switch to two tubs with makeshift screens on the top. Other people use a stock tank or a large cardboard carton for watermelons. www.foleyswaterfowl.com has some pics of their different brooders. Brooders are only limited by your budget and imagination...

yes....plastic tubs work well and so do cardboard boxes.....

back to cooking the snacks for the game...... yum

If you want something easy for outside and fast clean-up but durable, I use plywood and 2x4 for the frame and make a roughly 6x3x3 with no floor. Then I just lift it up and bring in the wheelbarrow when it's done, put it back down, fresh bedding, and new chicks...I cover it with an old screen door or a frame with some chicken wire over it. If it's cold, I put cardboard over that to keep the wind out.

I can raise 30-40 in there until feathered out so you should be fine.

Mrs Turbo....what kind of snacks? I love snacks!
and just an FYI to Turbo...I have 4 SP chicks currently hatched out....
Also, I built a brooder similar to the one yall have.....I have posted pics on the Coops etc thread.
