I thought I would show you guys what I'm doing at the house I'm renting. It was the perfect place to get some pens built to raise birds on my own again. As a few of you know my parents have been raising them the last five years while I was in college and starting a career. Anyway, here's our one day progress on the 30x18 poultry barn.
Front View 4'x10' still need to put on doors, nest boxes, roost bars, and hanging feeder and water.
Here's the the barn. There is a total of 6- 4'x10' pens with about a six foot isle in front for conditioning coops or rooster pens.
Dad finishing up a wire divider. Ha, he's pretty good help for free. Thanks Dad!
Yeah my blue girls are a bit small. Today we did have a hawk scare. A few of the girls have a bad habit of ignoring the boys danger calls; well, today a hawk cashed in on this and nearly had one of them. Dad heard the ruckas and scared the hawk off. The gang immediately ran into some brambles for cover. We rounded them up and escorted them to the coop for look over as there was a ring of fluffy feathers on the spot. The girl that was attacked was missing some back feathers and luckily only had 1 scratch on her. Thank goodness Wyandottes are so fluffy. (Blue Kote blends in with her feather color)
She is in shock so I am watching her as sometimes the shock alone can be dangerous for them.
Maybe I can get some smarter chicks from a breeder
Poor silly girls; hopefully they will learn to pay attention to the roosters more.
Today I learned color may help some but flock smartness makes a difference too.
Nice looking pens there Wayne. Keep us updated on your progress. You might even want to start your own thread in the coops section with all of your pictures as people really like seeing everyone elses designs and setups.
Are you feeling any better Mrs. Turbo? Those virus buggs are no fun.
My gang has been very jumpy today after the hawk attack yesterday, which is good cause they need to learn how to be alert when about.
Alice was hanging with the hurt girl so I tried to get some picks of Alice. She is one of my prettier hens and is sweet. Loves to tell me about everything and sit on my shoulders.
She has the slate/dark legs versus the preferred yellow. What do you guys think of her?
Alice is on the left of this shot so you can see her tail. The girl that got attacked is on the right:
Tried to get a good side shot but Alice kept moving on me. Here are some other 2 shots of Alice;
Will try to get some better pictures once my camera re-charges.

feeling better as long as I dont move around too much....thanks
Taking the 5 year old to the DR in the morning....she has been puking since Wed. night. Called the Dr last night and she said to try prevacid for 2 days, it didn't work.
Leg color is still something that needs work on the blue and black Wyandottes in general.....we also found that if you breed all yellow leg hens the rooster will lose the green sheen.... so it is a lose, lose situation. I do see yellow showing on the feet so that is a good thing.
