Can anybody help me determining my BLRW's gender...I'm really stuck. lol

This is Calypso my BLRW chick. It's about a month old and is not very pretty but I'm stuck on her gender. I've lived thinking its a girl but I'm starting to get worried...

Another Question...why do people advertise BLRW's ase EXTREMELY RARE chicks and sell them for $7-8 dollars when you can get them sexed from the hatchery for 4 dollars?

My initial thought is cockerel. But without seeing it's wattles and overall look, it's difficult at this age.

As for cost of chicks from breeders with good stock and sexed hatchery chicks............well, it's a matter of quality of the bird and purity of the breed/variety etc. Those breeder chicks for $8-$9 will probably be alot larger, wider and better colored than most of the hatchery chicks you can buy. In short, you get what you pay (or don't pay) for.

I got mine from a friend who paid $2 for each egg and was told they would have beautiful dark red plumage and this is what I get? lol. I guess your right. Just have to know who you're dealing with :)

That isn't bad for eggs, assuming they are shipped in good shape and some of them hatch. I don't know enough about this color development yet, to know how long it takes for the coloring to "finish." But if you really want some good ones, there are BYC breeders and a few others that aren't on here, that have good stock. Take some more pics of your chick if you get the chance. It looks like a cutie either way.

It is too early to tell how your chick will turn out. Here is an example of one of the BLRWs I hatched from eggs bought from a well known breeder, Bill Braden.

This is a pullet at about the same age as your chick: A real ugly duckling

Here is the same pullet at around 5 months old: She turned into a real beauty!

Patience is the key, I start culling for type at around 3 months and lacing at 4-5 when the adult feathering starts to manifest. Right now I have around 175 juveniles and have only sold around a dozen cockerels so far this year.

I don't have pics of them yet. They are black with yellow chipmunk stripes or black with yellow horn, chest, and belly. Some of them are swirly yellow on black. Some from each pattern have brown on there heads. I don't know. They are the first SLW peeps I ever had. I have 18 of them. I hope to get at least one nice hen.
Did you hatch them? Color doesn't make much difference. Do you have photos of them?
