The Wyandotte Thread

Here is the last post of my Wyandottes. The first two are my White Laced Red that I started with, they improved greatly over the years with their base color really deepening especially in the pullets.

The last picture is of my own creation Dun Laced Gold Wyandottes. I had a trio of them and raised a few each year but not very many. They were gorgeous because of the color dilution of the Dun. At least I thought so.
Enjoy all the pics.
Hope they give some of you an idea of what Wyandotte bantam varieties look like and maybe inspire you to get some in the future.

Oh I had some of those back in the day also. Had SL and GL hatchery birds. They were great layers and good sized birds but mean as hell!! Got rid of them for that sole reason. Had to carry a bucket and stick into the pen just to fight off the roosters. Only Wyandottes I didnt like.

Everyones photos are just cool cool cool.

Anyone in FL looking for some Wyandottes? I am near Ocala, FL and would like to order some Wyandottes but dont need 30. So if someone would like to order with me and share that would be great. Or maybe trade. I have golden laced and blue laced reds. I bought enough to pick out my favorites and have some left over. I would really like some silver laced and blues.

Also new to chickens so when someone says single comb on a wyandotte, what are you talking about, any pictures?

How do I tell my girls from the boys. They all look the same to me.

Is there any particular place that you wanted to order your Wyandottes from? I just succumbed and asked the local feed store if they could get a special order for me added to their regular shipment from Mt. Healthy. They did it - a few chicks of 3 breeds - including a few GLWs, and vaccinated for Marek's just for me. The chicks come in April 7th. It was Reddick Brothers Hardware in Micanopy, if you want to check with them. In fact, they had GLWs at the store on Saturday when I stopped by. My 6-year-old GLWs are from Mt. Healthy and I really like them.

There can never be too many pictures!

I love the photos. Great fun to see everyone's chickens. Also very helpful to me as a new chicken keeper to see what they look like at various ages. So more pictures, please!

I agree there is no such thing as 'to many' pictures - it is wonderful to see every ones chicks visually.

I would love to see some young chicks 3-10 weeks , to see how they develop into hens/roos.

OMG Katy!! those SLW young chicks are absolutely beautiful .

My 4 week old's look nothing like that with the white coloring lined with black.

I wonder why there is such a difference in the same breed?

some of mine look 95% black (but have the start of a silvery long feathers on their necks). I bought them from a local breeder (problably not breed to show though, don't know he seemed like a regular farmer).

There's a difference because of hatchery versus show quality. Hatcheries don't breed for lacing, body type, appearance in general - They just breed for an egg layer. If your local breeder has chicks like that, chances are they got them from a hatchery. I've seen a couple people around here even that sell "Wyandotte Hatching Eggs" - And the Wyandottes look just like mine. Hatchery quality.

I'd love to post pics of all my girls just as a comparison to show versus show quality, but I'm afraid they'll be too ugly, poorly laced, and gangly compared to Katy's. And they're a year old, too.
