The Wyandotte Thread

I am enjoying the pics of the Wyandottes. I am getting ready to start my flock (have previous experience with chickens) and would like to raise Blue Laced Red Wyandottes this time. Does anybody know where I can get about 10 laying hens and a rooster in North or Central Georgia? If so, let me know.

I think there a bunch of people with them near you.

I hope you find some nice ones!

Here is the Wyandotte breeders of America website. It will help you critique your bird  :D    I like it because it has drawings.

He is nice. His color is good. But his wattles seem to long, idk if that is against the A.P.A or not.
His comb needs to be tighter to the head, also His tail shouldnt be that high, and should have a gradual swoop from his base of neck to his tail. Not a sharp V, should beable to put a golfball snugly in that curve. Also he doesnt show the fluffyness or roundness of the body.

But I agree with what someone said. He is better then most Ive seen. Not many people breed the golden laced. And using the right hens, can produce some great GLW.

Thanks!. So, possibly needing a longer back? His comb is horrible, but my hens have pretty nice tight combs, hopefully I can improve on that a bit. I did't even think about the wattles. He does have color and lacing going for him. I'd like to see a bit more size on him too. I haven't weighed him in a while, but he seems a little small to me.

How old is he? Wyandottes are slow maturing, they can change so much after their molt.
Most exhibition birds are shown at 2 or 3 years old...he could round out.

And no, he needs a short back. check out

He does not have GLW but he has in my honest opinion the best SLW in the country.so you can compare bodys
I am gettting 2 pairs of BLRW from his tomorrow.

or check out the standard for wyandottes, good illistrations and info to improve this wonderful breed.

No, his back should be short and looks ok. It is the lack of a gradual sweep from the neck to the base of the tail. Your bird has a "V" instead of a soft, flat "U" shape. They should look like a fat heart from the side, but your bird looks like a skinny heart because his back dips in. Here is my BLRW rooster for comparison. His tail set is slightly low (working on that) but see how he has a soft, gradual transition between his neck and the base of his tail?

Here is an example of a nice quality hen. She has produced some great chicks. I did not breed this bird. She came directly as a chick from the Foley's.

My first wyandotte, she is blue but has splashes of red in her wing feathers so I'm not sure what her color would be called? I'm pretty sure this bird was the beginning of a project for the lady I got her from. I would like to have more and play with color. I'm not interested in showing just want to have fun with color. All the photos are awesome!

I'm pretty sure you have a cockerel there with the color coming in on the wingbow and overall structure.

Hmmm, I've been saying it was a roo but no one here agrees with me. The hackle feathers are really pointy too, but since I've only had chickens since spring and no roos to compare too I wasn't sure. He's not crowing yet, not that I've heard anyway. Thanks, good to know for sure. So what is his color, was he crossed with a red to get the red splotches? These are actual splotches not lacing.
