The Wyandotte Thread

I talked with Pauls early in the year myself. He got out of the mass selling to concentrate on showing from what I understand. Ive always had excellent transactions with the Foleys and their stock is some of the best out there.
I emailed Jerry Foley yesterday to inquire as to when they are going to begin taking chick orders for 2013. He advised that because they are so busy, they will not be taking orders for chicks in 2013. I am so disappointed!

Does anyone have any suggestions for breeders of good utility stock? We are looking into getting some dual purpose birds with a keen interest in eating the extras. The laced varieties are gorgeous, and having some eye candy while we are raising these birds to POL or butchering age would definitely be a bonus, but I also know that the strains that win the shows aren't always the ones that make the best layers or the best meat birds. Also, does anyone have any input on the BLRW as dual purpose birds. My husband really fancies this variety in particular but, being a newly developed variety, I'm not sure how true to type or function even the best stock out there is. While I tend to agree with him on the aesthetics standpoint, the logical side of my brain is telling me that it may be better for us to stick with a more established variety for better conformation and grow out/laying qualities that are more representative of the Wyandotte breed.

I think your thoughts on SQ and layers normally is correct. My Foley SLW lays for 5-6 days and then a day off and she is molting. He said he breeds for production too. The size on SQ SLW is huge! My guess is his BLRW are the same way. So you can have pretty birds with high production.

I will squeeze in also and say that even though the BLRW are not accepted into the A.P.A standards YET, doesnt mean they do not meet the type, and representation of the Wyandotte breed.
Yeah, its hard to breed them as close as one might hope will be the standard, but alot of people breed their BLRW for diffrent traits, Foley breeds for DARK,crisp, red and blue lacing, and mohogony red, as some breed just for the smokey blue color with golden lacing. or dilutes their stock, Or they just buy from hatcheries that DO NOT breed to the standard.( Or future standard:p)
but the better bred wyandottes are pricey.. I wouldnt eat my Foleys! too expensive! LOL
If you want wyandottes, the pretty lacing, rose comb, and fluffyness, I would buy chicks, or eggs from a backyard breeder, might not be EXACTLY bred to the standard, but it also will not break your pocket.I had a nice flock, wasnt SQ but alot of people wanted eggs, chicks, etc.

You may want to consider Wyandottes from Duane Urch. His are some of, if not the best anywhere. His price list is posted at https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/437644/exhibition-turkey-hatchery-list-updated-2012-price-lists

Here are some photos of Urch Wyandottes in Texas. Ruth also has Silver and BLRW. Her website is at http://www.wyandottesandrocks.com/p/wyandottes.html

All of my Wyandottes have come from breeders with a greenthumb for raising magnificient birds. I do not cross my birds with other colors or breeds to enhance their genetics. I breed lots of chicks and keep the best ones and repeat that every year. I use line breeding techniques and cull for size, color, type, and disqualifications. I am a member of the APA and I actually read my standard of perfection. I strongly recommend going to shows and talking to Judges. I call many of them on a regular basis to discuss breeding issues. I do not keep single combed birds in my Wyandotte breeding program. I also cull splash birds in my BLRW breeding program. They will hatch out but I do not use them.

Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (BLRW)
All of my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes are from Bill Braden of Oklahoma. I drove up to Oklahoma to have pick up these fine birds when Bill decided to cut back due to his health. He too is a major inspiration and I am blessed to have his bloodlines.
