The Wyandotte Thread

I got some georgous birds today from Jerry Foley :). I drove 10 hours to his place to pick them up. I am extactic with the birds I got! They were a birthday present to myself/ from my dad :p. I got 3 silver laced hens, 1 show quality silver laced rooster, a pair of standard partridge wyandottes and a trio of silver penciled wyandottes. So happy I was able to chat with him. He is such a nice person. Here are some pictures of the silvers during the trip back. Really bad photos but thought I would show them.

Does anyone have any suggestions for breeders of good utility stock? We are looking into getting some dual purpose birds with a keen interest in eating the extras. The laced varieties are gorgeous, and having some eye candy while we are raising these birds to POL or butchering age would definitely be a bonus, but I also know that the strains that win the shows aren't always the ones that make the best layers or the best meat birds. Also, does anyone have any input on the BLRW as dual purpose birds. My husband really fancies this variety in particular but, being a newly developed variety, I'm not sure how true to type or function even the best stock out there is. While I tend to agree with him on the aesthetics standpoint, the logical side of my brain is telling me that it may be better for us to stick with a more established variety for better conformation and grow out/laying qualities that are more representative of the Wyandotte breed.
We have Foleys line of BLRW. As far as meat goes, they make great stewing birds. They seem to lay at the same rate as the SLW.

foley only has bantam pencilled I believe. his son raises the bantams. With his help most likely. LOL
Going to get one or two partridge bantam hens for my foley roo I have soon too.. I like the bantam partridge better then the LF. I just sold my Foley Partridge LF today. They are beautiful, but not saught after locally then the laced birds, and I like the SLW and BLRW better

I also plan on getting some SLW too.
I guess you could call it a birthday gift to me, My birthday is in a week or two. YIPPY.... Lol
But then again, My Dachshund I got not to long ago was my Bday gift, too.! :p

Does Duane Urch raise Gold Laced(standard)? and if so is there a way to contact him about purchasing?

Rodger is going through a molt right now and seems like he's getting a little darker across his back, chest and even the front of his neck. Is it normal for birds to darken up this late? he's getting close to 2 years old now I believe.
(this is a total stink-eye pic but he was annoyed with me trying to run the ducklings out of the coop, lol)

Do you kniw why most show birds arnt shown until they are atleast 2 years of age?
Because Wyandottes mature slowly. Thwy do not fully mature untill 18 months.
And each molt can change little aspects, but the case here is that he is bringing " his true self" out.

This is why Foley says not to cull right away, to wait for a few months, they can change dramastically.

This bird isn't a Golden Laced. If anything it's sort of a Buff Laced which is not a recognized variety. To answer your question, yes, Duane has Golden Laced Wyandottes.
