The Wyandotte Thread

Yes, there will be a percentage that will inherit that trait. If you must use him try to use a female with a proper comb and cull for it. Body type should always come first though. Combs are relatively easy to fix.

Alright the hen does have a good comb and body type. I will post pics of the roosters later so someone can tell me about their body type.
Thanks

I would say body type should be one of your more important tasks. They need to be more rounded and full in the breast area, a wyandotte is a curvy breed.

Body type is THE most important thing. it doesn't matter how good the colour is or what a nice comb the bird has if it looks nothing like the breed it's supposed to be. The bird questioned about here looks nothing like a Wyandotte should look.
When I was apprenticing for my judges license I clerked for a very good Wyandotte judge, Ernie Durb. Ernie taught me to look for 3 circles when judging wyandottes. A large central circle that describes the shape of the body. A smaller circle set high, to the rear which describes the shape of the tail carriage. A third smaller circle set high to the front which describes the arch of the neck, the set of the comb & the curve of the beak. If you see thes 3 circles you see proper Wyandotte type. Then you can worry about refining colour which is much easier than changing type.
What I see often here, and which is common to many beginning fanciers, is the inability to see past colour. In order to learn to evaluate birds which is necessary to breeding it is necessary to be able to see & evaluate the entire bird not just a single aspect. It takes time, discipline & study. If anyone is interested in showing they need to own a Standard & they need to STUDY it.

Thanks for the info. I needed a rooster for my hen and they were $5 and i guess i got what i paid for. Do you have a picture of a gold laced rooster that has good body type so i can compare and see what to look for.
Does this wyandotte have a better body type?
