Ok, just got home, here goes! Hope they didn't end up too dark...

My splash, safe to assume roo here?

Pretty sure pullet. Hs a full tail, too... Hard to see, though.

Thinking roo? Darkest red, but same feathering on the tail as all 9 of the fuzzier ones. Very little tail also.

The rest are everyone together... I guess just call as you see it? If you can?

The BO need double checking, too... Starting to wonder if I have a breeding pair...

I can usually tell the sex of my wyandottes at 2-3 weeks of age. Usually the boys combs become super red compared to the females dull orange. Also a great indicator is how quickly they feather out. Females feather out very quickly compared to males. I have had males 2 months old and still have fuzzy butts!

In this picture the baby on the bottom left is a cockerel and the two near the top pullets. As you can see the boy is still fuzzy compared to the feathered out pullets. In this photo they are about 6-8 weeks old I think.



Here are the same babies a bit older. Here you can see the comb and wattle difference between them.


Here is another example of a young cockerel who hasn't feathered out yet.


2-3 week old cockerel. Bright red comb and wattles are a dead give away.


Here is a pullet who is about a week older than the cockerel. Her comb is still a orange color with tiny wattles.

I think these pictures are great. I did feather sex (I know it's not reliable) at three days old the two I posted above and was going with pullet based on feather growth, but the little wattles so early threw me off. Seeing your pictures really shows me the difference. I gave the othe four away(3 males 1femle). I had 24 chicks back in October and the feathering in pattern was pretty accurate on most (not the two laced brahmas). Thank you dracoe19 your pictures helped since this is my first time with the breed and I'm hatching out some BLRW come April.

Ctfeathers- I see at least 3 Roos in the first set of pics. Look for ones that have good tail feather growth. Those are most likely the pullets. And dracoes Picts of the cockerels look similar to yours. Just to show you how pullets feather faster here is some pics of three wheaten marans. You can clearly see there in two cockerels and one pullet. But that just gives you the best idea not a defini

So, my little little slw that was supposed to be show quality, full size and female, not only is hatchery quality, 2/3 size and possibly male, but now has a bunch of goldy-brown color coming through, so not even pure slw. Man, I got had lol. But I love her

YEP!!! I bought some SLW chicks at rural king 2yrs ago, just for my egg eating laying pen...and as they started maturing their feathers were coming in brown too! I will never put these into a breeding pen ever....I would not want to pass those genes on... I don't think they are actually pure-bred...but they are overly-friendly

Can I ask a question everyone. How does the color breakdown work with the BLRW? Is it like a BBS scenario. I know the gold & silver breed just the two colors, but I'm missing something. When I look at the pictures of BLRW there are the differences. I see splash (is that correct), the bl red and red laced black. So you can get all three?

base color for all blrw should be RED (darker the better) but the lacing color follows typical bbs breeding.

There is a person near me who is selling "all female" wyandote chicks for $10 each. They are using a picture that is from a European breeder and shower as their picture! It makes me so angry because it is so misleading! I was worried they would start using my pictures in their ad. I emailed them last year because I figured they were older birds asking where they are from, what quality they are, basic questions. NEVER emailed me back since. Scardy cats can't even be honest and just say we are re-selling them. I don't even charge $10 a chick! Mine are only $8 right now.

The one in the front pullet the back hard to tell...

That big BLR is definitely a cockerel. Two in front of him look like pullets.


Hard to tell in these pics for the orps. Pictures like above are best.
