The Wyandotte Thread

everyone's got to start somewhere, and if hatchery birds are what they get, even if they're not show quality they can still be loved. I've had hatchery birds before, and used them as learning tools to know what NOT to look for in my desire to get better birds.

I did a similar thing with my first standard poodle... after getting him, I learned that he had probably every physical flaw a dog could have within one breed, and still be recognized as that breed, but I loved him dearly. It just taught me what things to look for in a dog and breeder in the future... I lost my Shadow last November (almost 12), but hope to have Sunny (3 years old) even longer.

Great out look. We all have to crawl before we can sprint and every step in between teaches us something good bad and otherwise lol

I got a few half decent pictures of the birds today. It's pretty hot here so no one really wanted to cooperate, even when i tried to bribe them with treats.

The big guy, he's the only Roo I have now.

My oh-so-sweet Splash hen. She's such a lover, she pecks my leg until I pick her up when I'm out in the coop.

I've got 2 Blue hens as well but one didn't want pictures taken & the other is being an evil broody.

And here's my little Buff Laced girl. I just Adore her!

jtabor1387 I really like your birds. I see your wyandottes pick out all the corn from their food like mine lol. I really like the color of your partridge boy and his chest shape. Is your Wyandotte hen (2nd picture) a dun color?

For those with fertility problems..

Invest in a microscope. You can purchase a used student medical one for pretty reasonable. You will make your money back the first time you use it. Checking for mobility in semen and checking for semen in the sample is pretty easy. It will let you know if your problem is in the males or if it is in your females. You can also check for worms and cocci with your investment.

Yes, summer is horrible for chickens. They slow down all the way around. Egg production and sperm production. They need those reserves to keep alive and cool.
Feed can also be an issue. Layer for rooster can make those sperm cells lack vigor and mobility. Hen can be fat and have fertility problems in the oviduct.
Health and pox is a big one for infertility in males and females. If you live in an environment with mosquitoes you might have pox in your flock.
Buckland and Hawes did infertility testing in 1968. They tried to correlate comb differences and semen counts. It is prettying interesting.
