Hey guys, so I've got a GLW who's probably...nine months old now? Stopped counting her exact age when she started laying eggs (39 weeks!), haha. The thing is that recently she's started to have tiny feathers begin to grow between her toes and it's only between her toes. We first noticed it about three days ago, we first thought she'd stepped in a big pile of...well, y'know. But when we actually looked properly - they were miniscule tiny feathers growing! She was from a hatchery so we thought she's been crossed with something, but then we thought...wouldn't the feathers have started growing much sooner if that had been the case? Has anybody heard of this kind of feather growth happening at this age...?![]()
I completely hear ya! I started with 10 pullets with no intention of ever owning a cock. At one point this year I had 99 chicks and the 10 pullets, I'm now at 83 (I sold several chicks) and am working on developing my breeder flock.Oh my goodness, I have TOTALLY caught the fever! My intentions of 3 - 4 decent laying hens in my backyard has blossomed to 11. HELP!!!![]()
Looking forward to more pics! Maybe it'll still be a BLR but just with slightly different pattern. I noticed even speckled sussex look like that as chicks (same as welsummers). If the comb is the same as the others (rose comb) it's probably still a BLR or partridge wyandotte. It would be interesting if you post photos of it as it grows up, compared to the others. (fun to watch them grow up no matter the result - cute pics!)Ok, here are couple of more pics at Day 11 (today).
In this picture chick#2 from left and the farthest to the right with its head down have similar head pattern and similar lacing.
whereas this chick in the middle with the V-Shaped head pattern has a different type of lacing. I am not even sure if its lacing. So something is definitely different or off here.
Will post more pictures on Day
So with feathers on legs/toes is that a DQ? I have a very nice (so far) pullet that has a few feathers on her legs. I'm wondering if I should cull her.
I was planning on letting my son sell her at the 4-H market sale with 2 other pullets. With them being girls I'm sure they'll go to be layers instead of the stew pot. We fortunately have a small poultry program and the buyers prefer pullets to add to their flocks. I don't like the idea of eating my non hatchery chicks, I feel they are too nice to not be given the opportunity to be layers, they just don't need to be breeders.I'm sure you could sell her on craigslist no problem. Most people just want pretty hens that lay eggs and it sounds like she qualifies!!
Yes it would be a DQ.... cull for it.... hum I would have to wait and see how it plays out. She would have to be REALLY REALLY GOOD to keep her with it. Sounds like there is not much of it and I would think if you breed her she might not throw chicks with it but then she could throw lots of chicks with it. Test mate her and see what you get. The genes are there you just don't want them to express. So with feathers on legs/toes is that a DQ? I have a very nice (so far) pullet that has a few feathers on her legs.
