The Wyandotte Thread

Still not sure about this one! 9 weeks old on Monday. Comb and wattles have not really gotten darker or larger. Everytime I post I get a 50/50 on the gender 😂 is it still a mystery?

I haven't posted in a while. Here are some of my Columbian Wyandotte selected for the breeding pens this year. I've set up three pens.
This is year four after crossing my Columbian with some of Larry Dye's White to bring in better combs, leg color and size.
Then taking the F1 back to Columbian.

Very impressive!!

How is egg laying?
Very good for these pens...girls are each laying an average of 5 eggs a week.

You didn't ask, but.....
I have been setting eggs since February 20 from the older hens in the pens and began adding the larger pullet eggs March 10 when they were large enough to incubate.

I use an older GQF cabinet incubator with trays large enough for 102 eggs....but I only load between 50 to 78 to a tray.
First test hatch popped March 12 with 48 out of the mature hens...54 eggs set.
Followed by hatches on March 20, March 26.

Our Oklahoma Poultry Show was cancelled so I added the show birds to the pens and shifted some roosters around.
Started using the pullet eggs with hatches on March 31, April 7.

Easter April 12 was 53 chicks out of 78 eggs....we had some really cold days during this collection.

Have other hatches due April 21 and April 29.
Will set another tray of 78 today...due May 6.
Then a final hatch due May 13 early enough in the week to mail chicks to Nebraska.

Hatch rates have been good....there are chicks everywhere...on the floor in the barn brooder room with a few hens and in the two brooder cage still under lights.

I'm selecting from the 4 and 5 week old chicks today...sorting for best SOP chicks and those to raise for the freezer.
