The Wyandotte Thread

I have bought my hens from a hatchery. I am a first time chicken owner but even I can see from all of the pictures of Mr. Paul's birds, Katy's birds and others that there is a tremendous difference in quality when it comes to the lacing and body types that conform to the standard. So I love my chickens but there is a difference even my very untrained eye can see. If you are looking for or are used to show quality birds, I just think you would go through many, many hatchery birds and be very, very lucky to find a show quality bird. And be frustrated, too, in the meantime, with stock that doesn't meet your expectations or needs if you are wanting to breed birds.

Just my two cents from the cheap seats

A few pics of my 4 week old babies...cannot wait to see how they develop. I have no clue if they are boys or girls, so if anyone has any idea please let me know.

Have you tried Ebay or Eggbid?

I have looked on eBay from time to time, but certainly don't pay close attention. I have not tried Eggbid.

I'd like to know a bit more about the chicks/eggs that I'm buying than seeing an auction picture (that came from who knows where). To that end, if anyone here has experience with an eBay or Eggbid seller of large fowl Partridge Wyandottes, I'd love to hear about it.

Tim I may be able to help you out finding partridge wyandottes. I know a couple people in southern Wi. who may have them they do show around the midwest and Ohio but it may take a few phone calls. I really do think they show partridge in the standard . At least that is what I have been told. Mike

Most people getting hatchery stock are looking for reliable production birds. You would have to be fairly uninformed to expect show quality from a large hatchery. Granted, most beginners fall into this category, but they're unlikely to do well with show birds without getting a few years experience under their belt - no matter where they get them from.

How does one import? I'm going to the UK later in the month and played with the idea of looking for Chocolate Wyandottes. Are there a tremendous amount of legal loops? Is it worth it?

I have 8 slw chicks from a hatchery, and wanted to pick out the best ones to keep (we are only able to keep 3). Can anyone give me advise on what the chicks should look like at this time? I noticed several have a brownish/red on their heads ... there is also a definite "u" shape on their back.

What should I be looking for?
