The Wyandotte Thread

Those silver laced are nice. I ordered some from him for a buddy and are in the bator as we speak. Even if someone says their birds are show quality doesn't mean the chicks will be. I wouldn't call my cochin bantams show quality but they produce awfully nice chicks!! All you can do is hope for the best , if you want show quality birds you need to go to a show and buy birds that have been shown or are full grown and you can tell how they are..

Well, just ordered some hatching eggs and will hopefully be back in the Wyandotte Bantam business fairly soon. Going to be trying to revive my Silver Pencilled line in the future but probably not this year unless I can find some mature Partridge Bantam females.

Newbie here with a few questions. This is such a fun and interesting thread to read. I'll be getting 3 GLW and 2 SLW(pullets) from my local feed store, they'll be in on Tuesday. Starting small to test the waters since I've never had chickens before... Once I decided I'd like to raise chickens, (mostly for fun but the egg thing is a nice bonus), I fell in love with the Wyandotte’s after looking the different breeds over at our local fair last year. I hope all goes well when mine get here!! But to show my complete ignorance on the subject I need to ask what's the difference between the birds I'll be getting ie from a hatchery and a bird you would refer to as show quality? Is it possible to get a quality bird form a hatchery? I mean I know that a breeder would get good results because they would practice selective breeding to get the traits that they desire but what breeding practices do hatcheries use? Will my Wyandottes be real Wyandottes? It never occured to me to even ask this until I'd ordered them and started reading some of the posts on BYC. Love to know this since sooner or later I'd love to get a roo and some pretty girls and try the breeding thing myself if I like having chickens as much as I think I will. Is their any good books on breeding and creating color variations in Wyandotte’s .. For now though I'll just keep reading from all your posts and be sighlently envious.

First thing...welcome to BYC!

The difference is exactly what you said....a breeder practices selective breeding and only breeds the birds that meet the APA standard for that breed and color variety....or at least as close to that standard as they can get, while hatcheries breed and hatch for quantity, not quality. No, it is not very likely at all to get a good quality bird from a hatchery. Your wyandottes will be wyandottes, but a lot of hatchery wyandottes are not marked well and don't have the correct body type. That doesn't mean they won't be good layers and nice birds tho.

I read several threads to learn stuff etc. So far in the years that I have been raising chickens, I have only had non hatchery birds once and these are bantams. I rasie birds for the fun and eggs. Chickens and Guinneas are very amusing and I keep looking at ducks but it is to dry here in the shadows of Death Valley.

I had GLW a few years ago and enjoyed their personalities and nice eggs. So far I have been satisfied with hatchery birds but have envious of many of the beautiful SPECIAL SHOW birds the BYCs raise. Now that I am a retired senior I wonder how far I will delve into the breeding programs. So far it has been difficult to hatch out any eggs sent from the humid eastern part of this big beautiful county. I am hoping that my new hatchery BLRW from the hatchery are satisfactory and go broody so I can at least raise some kind of chicks instead of having to purchase chicks.

Hey all
Here are some pics of my Wyandottes pullets we just picked up today, 2slw and 3glw from my local feed store. I was just wondering about color variations. One of the chicks doesn't have the same markings as the other 4. In fact except for her face she has no striping on her back at all! Is she a Wyandotte? or is it normal for there to be color variations in hatchery chicks of the same breed?
