The Wyandotte Thread

I tend to like the great contrast of the lacings. if they are not contrasting, whats the point? the whole point of the lacings are the contrast. But, I've just started raising chickens this year, what do I know?

however, i plan on focusing on the BLRW's as one of my three main breeds, and I plan on making it my goal to make sure the contrast is there, and darn the SOP.

So genetics generally makes my head spin but here's a question: If the black blrw's have no blue genes involved and the phenotype is of a gold laced except for the double mahogony gene and they breed true - 100% black blrw - can they be shown as gold laced wyandottes?

Also my color preference is the medium blue with the deep mahogony with a fairly wide lacing - not the thin lacing. Guess I just prefer the more subtle colors.

the lacing looks good not sure if the few spots where blk is in the wht would take off any. body looks good from what I can see. do you have a up right side shot?
If I'm off someone step in here. I have std size so take this like a grain of salt. over all I like her.

They are shown as Gold Laced by some people and (even though they - in my opinion, shouldn't be), and with some judges they win or place when shown as Gold Laced. To me. it's a case of judges ignoring the written standard. Gold's should be gold (without even a single copy of the Mahogany gene) and Red's should be red (with either a single or double copy of the Mahogany gene) and therefore I think it's time to add "Black Laced Reds" to the standard. Or, better yet - call them all what they look like in away that makes sense.

I think we should have - at the bare minimum:

Silver Laced - which should be called Black Laced Silvers
Gold Laced - which should be called Black Laced Golds
Blue Laced Reds - already named well
Black Laced Reds - the ones you get from two Blue Laced Red's mating - 1/4 of the time
White Laced Reds - presently called Splash - what you get mating a Splash and a Blue Laced Red - half of the time

I guess some people do show the Black Laced Reds as GLW, I know one breeder of BLRW who has a breeding pen set up of the Black Laced Reds and sells them as GLW.

I have always found the lacing to be too thick on the Black Laced...much thicker lacing than desired in a good show GLW, also the red is too deep to pass as a GLW in my humble opinion, but you certainly could show them as GLW. I have had people mistake them for GLW/Partridge Wyandotte crosses...

It is not really up to me to say a splash should be shown or not, I guess you could enter them as Splash Laced Red Wyandottes...since they are not really Blue Laced Red Wyandottes...it is just the way Andalusian Blue works, anyone who breeds birds with Andalusian Blue are going to get black, blue or splash. I would think if you entered them as BLRW they would not do very well since the lacing would be almost white instead of blue.....

Jerry,

It's interesting to note that genetic tests have shown that a good portion of the Red Laced White Cornish Games are actually Red birds with the homozygous blue gene. In other words - Cornish breeders have been showing and winning with "Splashes" for a long long time.
