The Wyandotte Thread

Quote:
Good BLRWs aren't a time a dozen, but there are a lot of poor examples of the developing color out there that are.

What I mean is their are a lot of "breeders" that have them big or small , hobby or for show. More people have them just about every site always has some for sale. Good or bad examples.
There are not alot of people offering buff like the blrw. So many like the color and breed or sell eggs. all over the web where if you look for buffs, blues, blks, partridge, dun, white, and so on you will find more slw ,glw, and blrw. Not the sq or good breeder quilty just blr 's are easier to find. Sorry if I did not make that clear as I was using my phone and it's not as smart as they say they are!

AbedsAviary,

I love the barred Wyandotte Bantam you have. How did you get that color affect? Or did you get him from another breeder?
All your bantams are lovely.

I bought him from another breeder. I really like barred colored birds, I like the bantams also but i prefer the large fowl over the bantams. i would love to see some Large barreds with good type and barring, I think that would be a beautiful bird.

I love the look too. I was thinking of breeding for some cuckoo wyandottes by crossing one of my roos (when they reach that age) over some dominque hens.
I was given the advice to use the Barred Rock though by another person on this forum or a white wyandotte.
I thought the dominque would be a good choice because of their rose comb too and similiar shape. I am really thinking about getting some dominque pullet chicks this coming spring to raise and breed them to see what the affect is and use the chicks that I like to start a barred line of wyandottes (or cuckoo).

If you just want cuckoo i think you could use a dominique but if i was going to try and make large barreds i would breed black wyandottes over barred rocks. Dominiques are not really barred but cuckoo and if you bred them over a black i think you would just get a mess. If you bred a barred rock over a black you should get 1/2 barred and 1/2 black. The barring should have more even barrs than if you bred a dominique. I think you would get both rose combs and single combs in your first cross. You should keep your best colored, typed rose combed birds and breed back over some nice black wyandottes and that should improve type and comb structure. Repeat that for 2-3 generations and i think you would have barreds at least as good as the blacks you used to make them. I dont think it would be all that hard to make a large fowl barred, it would just take a few generations, i have seen pics of some barreds here in the US but they are not really barred, they just look like a cuckoo colored mess. I am kind of surprised no one has made any good ones yet.

I am no genetics expert and if i am wrong about what i told you i hope someone with more expierence will chime in here and correct me.

Can you all please take a look at these boys and let me know what you think of their quality. Their lacing looks great to me but I am not to sure about type. The pics are not all that close because they both had a problem with me coming to close with a camera.

Thanks!

hehehehe.....yeah I really do like the cuckoo look; however, most other folks preferr the barred look to the cuckoo so as far as having a color affect that would get better support from others it would most likely be best to shoot for the better barred look for the standard size.

Well you helped me make my decision as you are the second person suggesting the barred rock versus dominique.

There are breeders in the UK that have the barred wyandottes and they are very nice looking. The other look in UK that I love is the chocolate wyandottes. However, I have limited space at this time and will only be able to work on one of the colors. Until my setup is at the next expansion point (I fully support chicken math).

Crazy Chicken Fever,

The first pick the mahogany boy has the nice rich tone but appears a bit leggy. Probably do to the angle of the shot?
The bottom pick the mahogany boy's front look appears nice. (sure someone with more exp will chime in)

The splash boy on the bottom pic standing at the right does not have the correct type of body shape. Wyandotte should have a rounded appearance and look like a heart shape from the side. Not too sure on his coloring either. I would not use him for breeding. This is just my take.

Would like to see some better pics of the mahogany one though such as a nice side profile shot with him standing straight up to see his profile and a bigger brighter picture showing a better view of his feather pattern.
