Yeah all my SP look almost white with a gray undertone to them....my SP/Partridge cross look like what you discribe...greyish brown with a chipmonk stripe. I have noticed different lines of LF SLW have different chick colors too.....I have one line of SLW that are almost black with a red head, I have another line of SLW that are almost blue looking. I would imagine what we are seeing is some lines carry the gold gene and some dont..

I hatched out 21 SP this past weekend, so they are starting to come on finally.

Well I hope you will take some pictures on any you keep when they get their adult feathers in...I am curious to see how they turn out..the type should be improved with that cross.

I will, I am very excited about this cross to improve the type. the rooster came from best in show winners and I have a white hen from a wyandotte breeder/ judge. hoping to hit this from both sides to get better type. color will come.

Well just goes to show ya you can learn something new everyday. I have probably hatched out hundreds of SP chicks in all my years, even some that were very light in coloration and never had a chick like that. Different strains with different backgrounds of breeding. That is great you have hatched out a good amount of them. I will be waiting til next weekend for our next big hatch. Still perturbed about losing so many chicks with the incubator problem....but whatya gonna do. I havent done any Partridge/SP crosses yet. Still trying to get enough of the SP to work with first. But thinking about it and the past years, I would say I did notice the lighter the down the less brown there was in the adult...... but even then, my chicks were a dark grey with the distinctive brown and black stripes on their backs.....Something I will look a little more at in the future to see if there is a definitive corrolation....
My GL that I have hatched were almost always all black with just red on their head and wings. WLR were similar except all white with a red head and on their wings. Interesting stuff.......

they cross whites onto BLRW in Germany on a regular basis...suppose to take 3 gen to get the color and lacing back...first cross back should be F1 X F1...stamp that type down.
