Hmmm, I've been saying it was a roo but no one here agrees with me. The hackle feathers are really pointy too, but since I've only had chickens since spring and no roos to compare too I wasn't sure. He's not crowing yet, not that I've heard anyway. Thanks, good to know for sure. So what is his color, was he crossed with a red to get the red splotches? These are actual splotches not lacing.

No, his back should be short and looks ok. It is the lack of a gradual sweep from the neck to the base of the tail. Your bird has a "V" instead of a soft, flat "U" shape. They should look like a fat heart from the side, but your bird looks like a skinny heart because his back dips in. Here is my BLRW rooster for comparison. His tail set is slightly low (working on that) but see how he has a soft, gradual transition between his neck and the base of his tail? 




Here is an example of a nice quality hen. She has produced some great chicks. I did not breed this bird. She came directly as a chick from the Foley's.

I like the "fat heart" description. That helps. He just turned 1 year.

He still isnt fully grown then. It takes 18 months for a wyandotte to fully mature. Good thing is, Longer production life.

After his next molt he will change dramasticly.

That's what I'm hoping for. He has steadily improved from the pitiful little chick I almost culled numerous times. I noticed he was losing tail feathers today when I was out watching them. His tail set is much better minus those long feathers. Everyone is dropping feathers right now.

yea they are molting. Jerry foley mentioned on his site tails do not change much. But he was explaining about the openess of the hens tail. So I dont know 100 percent if his tail will be higher or lower. No telling. But he will probobly deepen out.

Hi everyone, have enjoyed reading through many of these pages and just love so many of the pictures shared!!! I think reading through all of them is going to take a bit more time!!

I would like to share a few of our new additions purchased this week. Totally fell in love with our young Wyandotte chicks that I bought a few weeks ago, silver laced, blue laced and gold laced, so added two new trio's to our brood, the first trio is a Salmon Laced Wyandotte and the second a Buff laced Wyandotte. They are such placid birds and just love their peticoats, they remind me of the French Can Can dresses

I'm in Scotland, the breeder brought the eggs up from England.
He was happy to explain a few of the colour basics, Buff x Buff will produce Buff. Buff x Gold will produce Blue. Forgot to ask about the salmon, will just have to wait and see what happens.
