They have lights and sirens for a reason folks!

gritsar - I am so glad your husband wasn't hurt.

to you for the scare I'm sure it gave you.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

mom'sfolly :

I really think that everyone should have a drivers test every 10 years. If you fail, you must go through a safe driving course before you can drive again. I'm 48 years old, and I haven't taken a driving test in over 30 years. I think it would keep all the idiots off the road for a while and force all the people who are too old to drive to give up their licenses.

I'm glad Keith was already, and very sorry he was put in jeopardy.

This. I know people would scream about the government, but you know driving is NOT A RIGHT. IT SHOULD BE EARNED.

We just went through this trying to get FIL to give up his license. And I know way too many people who won't pull over for a police car or ambulance. The other day I pulled over to let an ambulance go by and the driver behind me honked at me and then tried to pass me too! I let him.... If he hadn't been behind me the whole time I would have assumed he was with the ambulance the way he acted...

Glad Kieth is OK grit. Pass on hugs and our gratitude to him would ya?

Wow. Glad he's okay!

Personally, I loathe idiots who won't get out of the way or who try to "beat" the lights (whether it's a cop car, ambulance, firetruck, or train). I wouldn't mind so much if they just put themselves out of the gene pool, but they put others in danger as well.

Ever had anyone "chasing" the ambulance to get past the lights or thru heavy traffic? It does not happen too often but it does once in a while. Seeing them just infurates me how much they can get away with it.

I don't mind a civilian car going behind a cop car, if someone in the car has to go to the hospital and the cop will escort them to the ER. That is rare.

You are married to a great man, Grits.

That young lady, the member of HUA club - I would wanna beat her - not feel bad like your DH.

Maybe a good beating would revoke her club membership.

Cause it does not sound like the accident will.

for you both.

That's a tough one. Often there is NOT a police car available here to escort family members to the hospital and the first car right behind the ambulance is family. The police tell them not to do that, but I have heard ambulance crews tell them to....

If police are available the put the family car between the ambulance and themselves, but mostly if they are at the scene they prefer to just drive family members. Our crews are often still volunteers and they are used to managing things without.... I try to assume the best in those circumstances its better fro my blood pressure.

That's another issue - people who don't know what "volunteers" means - one day DH was responding to a call with blue lights on when he got the call that the call was cancelled. So he turned into a shopping center to take down his light and turn around to come back home. Joe Citizen stopped his car blocking DH in place and started screaming at him about abusing his power to get to the pizza place.

Another local municipality had a neighbor to the fire house who so hated the sirens he parked his car sideways across the apron to prevent the fire trucks from going out.

The very wise judge sentenced him to community service hours in the fire house! LOL! He tried to avoid it and sued but the second judge not only threw out his suit but fined him and made the fine payable to the fire house.

We ALWAYS tell them not to, and to drive the speed limit while going to the hospital. We inform them that if they do follow us closely while we are driving lights and sirens they will be pulled over and ticketed, b/c we will radio police dispatch.

Yes Joe Citizen doesn't realize how many times you are enroute to a call and get cancelled for any number of reasons, we have had similar experiences so at our service we do not downgrade to non emergent on a main street or a parking area, we drive to the nearest secondary street to downgrade.

Our area is in something of a culture shock I think because of the massive development building over the last ten years. DH grew up here where everybody knew everybody else and knew who they were and what they were up to..... He was so shocked by the guy's attitude. It never occurred to anyone in this small town to have to be discreet about downgrades but they are now on standing orders to proceed to the police or fire house before downgrading and turning around.

Once upon a small town if DH had stopped at a pizza place or other store to downgrade people would come out and offer him food....

This is a community so small that he used to run out of classes in high school to respond to ambulance calls and the teachers let him! Everyone knew who he was and where he was going.

He came back after the military and now it is different. It got gentrified, all mcmansions of people who are used to paid services and expect them. You should have been there the night one guy called the fire department (smells and bells no fire) and then started yelling at the volunteers that he paid their salary!

Since 9/11 people have gotten more appreciative of our armed services. Perhaps we'll remember to be kin toward our LEOs and fire personnel paid or not too.
