They want to make it ALL illegal. What do you think of Senate Bill 510

Hmmm.... Think $1.4 billion over 5 years will be enough to cover those costs? I'll ask again... Did you watch Food Inc.? Those were real people. Don't say that they will never come after the "little people".

People get sick and even die every year from contaminated food factories. Remember the peanut butter plant that had a leaky roof that was dripping on to the production line?

Tainted food affects not only the guilty producer, but whole industries. People stop buying peanut butter from any producer, because they don't know who they can trust.

Now, there's plenty of room to discuss the little details and to consider whether a clause here or there has an unintended consequence. I have been concerned about regulations favoring large over small producers, and I think that has been addressed. This bill has been working its way through for some time, and many amendments address that. I'd point out that Senator Tester IS a family farmer.

Here are some perhaps less alarmist links to consider.

I absolutely agree with this. It's YOUR responsibility to do the research using a variety of sources. That makes Glen Beck a responsible journalist for making that suggestion. Funny, I don't ever hear any others saying that.

ETA: I also wanted to add that I certainly don't agree with everything that Glen Beck says simply because of further research.

Just as a note, I've met Judith McGeary (who wrote the analysis at the link) in person (as well as email) and talked to her extensively about local food issues. She used to be a lawyer and now she is a full time farmer with a significant egg business, in addition to her advocacy against NAIS and for local food. She knows both her chickens and her law.

She calls it "ugly sausage making" but she also feels that the bill as it stands currently will not harm small farms, nor will it force small farms to register with the government. I have substantial respect for her expertise in this area.

I would humbly suggest that particularly since Glen Beck has a paid staff to do research for him, that he has at least as much responsibility as any other American to take the time to check his sources and "do his own homework" and ensure that he has his facts somewhere in the ballpark of correct before he goes spouting off.
