They want to make it ALL illegal. What do you think of Senate Bill 510

Blackbart, YES, YES and YES!!! And there are so many more. One that really drives me crazy is that you can never outright own your property even after it is fully paid for. You will always be expected to pay property taxes. That is the ultimate theft of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Right on, freedom is a illusion they gives us to keep us happy and controllable. Just one of the ways they try to control the sheep.
When you start searching there are many many stories, often buried in the news.
If you think you are free and your Government gives you freedom, try not paying your property or income taxes and see what happens.
All of us little people are just head tallies that pay money to keep the big machine going.

I would be very curious to see what names are on the boards of the Big Ten.
I know one of them is supposed to be a voice for the people's conscience, meanwhile he owns a company that is totally opposite of what he preaches.
I guess being a human/environment rights activist doesn't pay for his McMansion.

That one wasn't QUITE a home garden. He was gardening far in surplus of his own needs, selling at a market, and hiring outside help, too.

For those who aren't aware, many places won't allow you to grow a garden in your front lawn, HOA or not. You are often restricted to your back yard. What constitutes the front yard is often defined by law, too. You cant' just move your fence and say that a section of the yard is part of the back yard...

Who defines what a "home garden" is, how large it can be and what you can do with your harvest? I'll tell you this much... it's surely not the governments job. Why do people ALWAYS forget that it's the government that works for us; not the other way around?

What I have seen about this bill:

- It raises standards and eases enforcement of basic food safety rules (ie, you have to butcher meat someplace clean, not outside where dust and dirt can blow on the meat)
- It applies to COMMERCIAL farms - not use-for-yourself gardens
- If you sell things to other people, that's commercial, not use-for-yourself
- As the bill is written, the standards (including a lot of paperwork) apply equally to micro farms and big corps
--- Big corps aren't really happy with this, but they like the equal enforcement of the rules, they want to stop the outcry over contaminated food, and they want clear standards. Fuzzy standards are no body's friend.
--- Small farms have previously been overlooked in standards enforcement. Selling at farmer's markets has also frequently been done 'under the table' and taxes have not been paid. This bill won't affect tax enforcement much, but may mean that small farms have to meet the same health standards as the big boys.
--- Meeting health standards is a) hard and b) expensive. Many small farms will see their profits - never great in the first place - disapear when they have to meet the standards.
- Impact on backyard flocks is unclear. There may be some community health standards (ie manure disposal) that will be enforced on backyard flocks.

As a consumer, I have mixed feelings. I want all the food sold to be held to a high-but-achievable standard. I want small farms to be profitable. I am concerned that large processing plants (think the spinach E coli outbreak, which came from a small farm and went to a large processing plant, plus all the ground meat recalls) may contribute to the problem. But I don't think giving small farms a free pass to comply with health standards is a good idea.

I think that you're missing the point that this bill can be misconstrued to "apply" to "any food producer"- that would include us, backyard gardeners, small farmers and the like. Too much vague language and possible loop-holes.

Time for a good tea party revolt.

All incumbents out, get some new idiots in. Keep repeating until they are either all gone or get the message.

Isn't that the truth! Do we have any hope to find honest legislators that have our best interest TRULY at heart? I just love this country and the freedoms that so many have died to protect. I get very passionate when the loss of any are at stake.

Citizens for Health has been tracking the progress of The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, S. 510. While the bill has been amended it still has a long way to go for us to consider supporting it, and now that Congress is returning from Thanksgiving recess we need to increase pressure on lawmakers to oppose S. 510.

Urge your Senators NOW to oppose S. 510!

This deeply troubling bill enshrines industrial agriculture as the primary, if not the only, legally-accepted form of food production in the United States. S. 510 sacrifices farmers and consumers in favor of the interests of big Agribusiness and it must not become law. If it does pass the lame duck Congress we must urge President Obama to veto it. If he signs it into law, its enforcement must be resisted; its funding must be blocked; and its repeal must be sought. The bottom line: The President and the members of Congress who support this bill need to know that it will be resisted, and that voters will be mobilized in opposition to the reelection of any S. 510 supporters in 2012.

The Senate will be addressing a series of procedural votes and the final vote on S. 510 is scheduled for 6:30 PM today, Monday, November 29, 2010. Use messages, phone calls [Senate: (202) 224-3121] - any mechanism you have - to insist that your Senators oppose the bill. If it should pass the Senate we will then fight to oppose it in the conference committee assigned to reconcile the House and Senate versions. If S. 510 makes it through the committee, we will bring our weight to bear on both the House and Senate to oppose the final version of the bill. Through these efforts we will also build grassroots opposition to its implementation and enforcement if it does pass.

Make no mistake about it - the 4000 new inspectors created by this bill will allow the FDA to further trample the rights and freedoms of anyone opposed to the industrial food orthodoxy that includes, among its horrors, food irradiation, genetically modified organisms, growth-enhancing antibiotics and hormones and the factory farming of animals. This industrialism has undermined America's food supply for the past four decades, and threatens the citizen-based small farms and local food production efforts that have begun to make some progress in saving American food from the clutches of industrial degradation.

Email your Senators NOW!

Thank you for your continuing commitment to this fight,
