My mom and I visited the feed store today and got three active baby chicks and two sleepy ones.
Three White Leghorns and two RIRs. All pullets. Four look fine but one has a red butt. I had to rub her
bum a few times to get the poop off, do you know whats wrong with her?

I'm very happy, the babies are sleeping right now.

congrats on the new chicks!

poop on the butt and red but like that is usually pasty butt. They get that a lot at the feed stores. Its very important to keep the vent clear back there so make sure to clean that off. You can use a warm damp wash cloth to moisten it and get it off. If it blocks the vent the chick can die.

do a search on this site for pasty butt and you will find lots of tips

Congrats.

I have a white leghorn that is one year old. I handled her a lot as a chick and she turned out to be a lot friedlier than a lot of people on here report about the Leghorns. Yes she is still a little flightly but I can approach her and sometimes I can pet her.

I got two more leghorn chicks this week. They both are very relaxed when we handle them right now. We will keep handling them daily in hopes of keeping them friendly.

Put some olive oil or pet. jelly around the vent of the ones with pasty butt. You usually have to clean them up multiple times before it goes away and that will make the next clean up a bit easier. Congrats on the new fuzzy butts.
