Because there are a lot of genes, and the number of combinations equals the number of genes to the power of the possible options for each gene. For a simple example, if you have 10 genes with only 1 option, there are 10 possibilities. If you have 10 genes with 2 options, there are 10 to the 2nd, or 100 possibilities. If you have 10 genes with 3 options, you 10 to the 3rd, or 1000 possibilities.

Probably a more literal answer to a rhetorical question than you wanted.
