It's an entertainment media. It contains all of the genres that movies and TV have. Why are movies and TV a thing? Same reason anime is.

If you are going to have a dog that has killed your last flock, do not get more birds for it to kill. Get rid of the dog, have a very secure pen so the chickens can't get out/the dog can't get in, don't let the dog roam as he pleases, or get rid of the birds. I personally wouldn't keep a bird killer dog, and I certainly wouldn't give him the opportunity to kill again.
