my sister kept two bettas (not housed together) in a bowl. She did everything right besides giving them a proper habitat and they died. Besides being too small, it doesn't allow for proper air circulation.

Agreed. Low water volume makes it difficult to regulate water temperature, and a cycled tank really does have lower maintenance requirements.

Disclaimer: This is not to start a debate here--just something I would like to say out loud.

but hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc living in your home, as pets.. not with a butcher date or as breeding stock.. there is NO reason to keep that animal in a tiny cage. The amount of hamsters in critter trails, guinea pigs shoved into cages not appropriate, and etc. Boggles my mind. Don't get a pet if you aren't willing to give it proper care.

My current rabbit was a rescue. He came from a home where the owners did not want him anymore, and just kept him in a tiny cage. When he came to me as a foster, he was so weak he couldn't hop or run. It took time for him to build up his muscles again.

A very popular YouTube channel that I am very very tired of hearing people refer to as if it is the end all be all guide to rabbit care.

I do like her channel, and I think it's a good place to start for people wanting to know more about how you can free roam rabbits and how to bunny proof. And while I don't agree with everything she says, she does have some good info and I think shes a good example to show people how you can live with a free roaming rabbit and still have a nice and clean home.

As for buying rabbits vs adopting them, I will often promote adoption over buying one, especially for first time rabbit owners. Mainly because rabbits from rescues are often fixed already, (sometimes, not always) litter trained, and usually rescues are good at placing the right rabbit in the right home.
If you're going to buy a rabbit, then do your research and find a reputable breeder that cares about their animals and don't sell to impulse buyers looking for a toy for their child.

As for pet stores, I'm mostly against buying animals from them. Most pet stores get their animals from puppy mill type places and a lot of them have major health issues. And from all the pet stores I've seen, none of them know about proper care. They mostly care about making as much money as possible, even if that means the animal ends up unhappy or even neglected and abused in some cases.
This isn't to say all pet stores are bad, there are some that do a great job caring for them and get them from good reputable breeders. This is more common with smaller local pet shops.
