Back when I was troubleshooting HVAC controls, I would work with people who would start undoing equipment and rewiring things. They didn't see that if it once worked and didn't now, it was broken not a mistake.
6-8 years ago after 2 different HVAC companies came out to “repair” our downstairs system & chaged us the *typical* multi $100 bill each time…. I got frustrated enough to grab my tools & flashlight and went to disassemble the air handler for the downstairs unit…..
my Better-Half was downstairs in the office (at this time) which was literally at the base of the stairs & a straight earshot up to the attic door where I was disassembling with that door wide open.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” I exclaimed.
Followed quickly by, “Honey I’m taking pictures to show you - Just a sec!”
…..
The system is a heat pump design with electric “back up/emergency coils” for a detail bit of trivia -I forgot how many BTU/KW the setup was.
3 or 4 of the ceramic terminals for 3 or 4 of those coils was absolutely fried and no longer connected. We had recently started to use the
Amazon prime thingy and so I did a quick look see for these puppies. *That was surprisingly easy too*.
showed her the part & the cost and what the prime delivery option was for us…. Back then it was fall and I think it was a 2-day “free shipping” thingy. Total cost was ~$12-13 each for these “heat sequencers.”
I showed her and she’s like “get it - ohhh wait lemme add a few things to that order….”
I laughed and said, “fine, just complete it soon, I’m gonna go cut and rewrite it all with new and better copper wires.”
a few years later when we found an actual “honorable” AC guy …. He saw my handy work and asked who did this? (Pointing at it) I told him I did and the back story as well (without naming the two companies)…. He was surprised and asked why I didn’t say the company names?
I said what benefit would come of it?
(Heavy sigh) “technicians” and “people in general” can be such a downer.
