Nah, he was a rooster. He crowed, had male specific feather growth, had spurs, and took very good of his hens. He only laid an egg the one time, and it remains a mystery to this day
Hens that get their main ovary damaged can develop male specific characteristics. It is physically impossible for a true rooster to lay an egg.

Sounds like someone was playing a trick on you.
