Things you wish you could say

Mill taxes are the easiest to get passed because only property owners pay them. Non property owners outnumber property owners and gladly vote for those taxes.
That is very true. In my state, there is no sales tax, so almost all of the revenue comes from property taxes. Now, I like the idea of supporting the museums, but I can't afford more taxes, so I voted against it. It passed very easily and now my property taxes are about $150 higher than they were before.

This year and next year, us long time home owners are getting a 50% tax break on our home taxes.

Just before we moved here, Proposal A allowed people to vote to cap the amount that property taxes could rise each year. Of course it was voted in. So the fact that we have lived here for 31 years means that our taxes (based on the assessed value) have increased MUCH less than the value of the property. When property is sold, the property is taxed at the new assessed value.

What has this done? Saved hubby and me and anyone else who stays in their home for a long time a ton of money. What else? Cost the state billions in revenue for schools and services.

There is a movement now called "Ax MI Tax" that wants to get rid of property taxes. I saw a woman with a petition, looking for signatures to get this as a ballot proposal. I asked her what the plan was to replace the funding for schools. She told me, in essence, schools have plenty of money, they just are wasting too much.

I believe we had the same or a similar property tax cap in CA as well.

How big is that Ax MI Funding movement?

When I lived in CA, I lived in the same house for over 50 years. I officially bought the house back in '89, and property taxes when I moved to OR was sticker shock.

Yes, property taxes were pretty steady when I was in CA. No big increases, so I could afford it.

I do not have a screaming migraine today that refuses to go away. The wind is not blowing cold and I did not get yelled at by a parent for their child being negative in their lunch acct. And yes, I got mad back. Raised my voice but did not yell. Just stood up for myself, I refuse to let parents yell at me
