Think I have a rooster

I do have 1 question if anybody can help on this I will greatly appreciate it: it is time to switch their food to laying pellets since I have 1 rooster (maybe 2) what do I feed them? I’m pretty sure they don’t need to eat laying pellets right

You can feed everybody an all flock/flock raiser type feed or even grower feed (non medicated) with oyster shell free choice on the side. The layers will eat the oyster shells as needed and the rooster and non laying hens won’t get too much calcium. This feed is perfectly safe for everybody. The hens don’t technically need layer feed as long as you make sure to provide oyster shells on the side. The extra protein might actually be good for them.

Purina has one called Flock Raiser and Nutrena makes one called All Flock and I am sure there are others plus of course starter/grower feeds in various brands.

I am currently feeding mine Purina Flock Raiser.

I don’t have any roosters but I like to take them off layer feed in the winter when they slow down on the laying. Currently only have two laying out of 11 so I figure it’s better for everybody.

Good luck with your birds. :)

Thanks I wasn’t sure this is my first flock I only have 6 total. 1 is definitely roo & I possibly have another red that could be a roo, what breeds do you have?

Agree with Kdogg331. I also bought sexed chicks and ended up with 2 roosters in the bunch. Unfortunately one ended up racoon dinner. The one I still have is friendly enough, I enjoy having him. I feed the Flock Raiser or All Flock, depending what my store has in stock when I need it. I also try to get the pellets instead of crumble, less waste in my opinion. I have the oyster shell on the side and I also feed them back their shells, which they seem to love! Enjoy your flock, they are so much fun to have.

Thanks this helps so much! I am currently feeding grower/finisher food & am suppose to switch to laying pellets at 18 weeks which they will be in a week so wasn’t sure about Roos eating later food.

Everybody starts somewhere! :) I am still constantly learning and I’ve had mine 4 years. Just added 5 more in April too.

I have a bunch of different breeds but right now I have 2 Black Australorp, 2 Buff Orpington, 3 Easter Eggers, a White Leghorn, a Speckled Sussex, a Delaware, and a Partridge Rock. I also had a Barred Rock but lost her in July. I have 11 total right now.

But I also have 9 chicks in the brooder right now too that I hatched myself. They just hatched Thanksgiving weekend. Gone a bit crazy with the chicken math this year. :lau

The roosters probably won’t be staying though so hopefully I get some hens. :fl

Anyway, your birds are very pretty and I hope the red turns out to just be a very personable pullet. :lau :fl

If not, I would keep the Brahma.
