Think our oldest is drinking cough syrup...

this is ewesheeps better half lol
i know what you are talking about and having suspisions about your child might have a addiction to cold medication

here are some ideas and a solution

#1 check with your local pharmisist and see if he can come up with a placebo to use that is safe and wont cause a trip to emergency room because you used syrup of ipicac

#2 the food color is a great idea mixed with Kayro syrup

if you find out she is and its time to make an appointment to the nearest family counceler and maybe they can get them into drug rehab with out going thu the court system

family need to be strong thugh these times of peer pressure and economic hard times in order to stay together

Is she in public school? Or well, any school really.

She's probably having a hard time sleeping, or calming down. Middle school is TORTURE. TORTURE. Theres so much pressure on you when it comes to performance its hard to deal with, but thats almost nothing compared to the survival skills required to just get through the day around other middle schoolers. Theyre cruel.

Once she started using that stuff to calm down her body becomes dependent on it. She knows it works, and its the simplest solution to her problem.

I'd say find her another outlet. Look closely at whats going on in school and home, with friends and boys. Some where there is something stressing her out and unsettling her. It could be something as simple as her diet, or not enough physical activity.

whatever it is i wouldnt panic. you've confronted her about it and gotten her answer, unless she's prone to lying I'd be inclined to believe her.

Hey Jac, clean up your spellings or tell your dyslexic fingers to straighten up!

Yeah. Watch that.

Cough syrup, like someone said, will lead to abuse of prescription drugs...then street drugs.
Coming from a teen that KNOWS -- talk to her about it. But, like someone else said, she may be having sleeping trouble. I know a shot or two of Nyquil is sometimes the only thing that will get me to sleep.

Ya all don't know what really goes on in schools today unless you work there and see it first hand. I work for a school and one of my daughters was in sixth grade a few years ago. I was on the playground with another grade level when I had a proctor stop me she did not know what to do(it was her third day on the job) she caught two students making out beside the building. I mean hands under shirts and in pants. You just can't amagine what kids do now a days. They are forced to grow up to fast in the school system. I have caught kids putting batteries out of their cell phones on their tongues to get the buzz feeling. Just alot of off the wall things we never thought of. I have 5 kids age rangeing from 22 to 7. I have seen alot. I also transport students to your church schools and alot is going on their too. I feel our kids are not safe now a days unless we as parents keep an open communication with them. Your best bet is to talk to her first, then call someone like a doctor on how to get to the bottom of it. Just from experience, thats what I would should suggest. Best of luck to you

You need to talk to her. I have 3 teenagers. Cough syrup or any orther type of drug or alcohol isn't the problem. It is a SYMPTOM. The average age for pot experimentation in my day was 14-16. I'm 46, the average age now is 9-11.

There is a reason she is doing this and unfortunately she might not even know what that is.

Replacing medications with a harmless alternative is a quick fix at best. When she does not achieve her desired result she will move on to bigger and better things.

You need to talk to her.

Well, here's the update. My daughter and I did some grape juice tonight. She was very happy to do it as it's her most favorite homemade item. My husband put 2-count 'em-2 bottles of red food coloring in the Nyquil. I rounded up a bunch of items like the Nyquil, lotions, powders, band-aids, etc. that go in the closet outside of the kids' bathroom and asked her to put them away for me...so I would know that she knows the Nyquil is there...so we food colored it, and also my husband scraped a mark with a needle so we could tell if even a little was taken out........................so we're waiting...................

Waiting..........waiting...................waiting...................and she fell asleep!!!

I'm not saying it won't happen tomorrow, it just gives me hope that maybe it is one of her friends.................so until tomorrow night, thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My DH drank cough syrup as a child and had his stomach pumped, I think 4x his mother said. They locked it in a cabinet above the fridge but he would get to it anyways. Other than cigarettes he has no addictions and never has. He's the most straight laced/ law abiding citizen I know.

Good Luck with your daughter.
